NZ's iconic native conifer. Slow growing but well worth the wait for the tree to mature into its stately form. When juvenile the foliage tends to have copper bronze tones but as the tree ages green is the more dominant colour. One to plant for your grand children! Est.10yr.growth.

A stunning native that hails from the Chatham Islands. Strong broad swords of arching foliage coloured a sensuous silver grey. Use in groups for a bold dramatic statement. Tolerant of sun or part shade but hates "wet feet". Looks good in a container. Hardy and evergreen.

A delightful classic Astelia except this one has attractive silvery lime like leaves that arch. Often seen growing in the crutches of trees makes this plants suitable for well drained to dry soil types or pot and tub culture. as it names suggest flowers are fragrant.

A very attractive little 'Sedge' with arching leaves of green edged with silver. Forms a neat and tidy evergreen clump and would look most impressive planted en masse. Plant in morning sun or part shade in soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Would make a nice container plant too. Perennial. PVR.

Insignificant brown flowers will appear amongst the foliage in summer.

NZ Native Grass. This is a graceful little grass or tussock with fine, light silver green needles of foliage that curl over at the top. Looks its best when planted in large groups or drifts. Easy to grow in sun or part shade in average soil. Evergreen.

If your clump of Carex becomes a little scruffy give it a new 'do' by cutting off the top growth - you can be quite severe - and it will rapidly re grow with renewed vigour.

Native wetland grass. A bright green grass that forms a large clump. With age, a trunk-like mass of old leaves forms so the grass seems perched on a tall mound. Good for planting in damp to wet areas but will tolerate short periods of dryness. Plant around ponds as shelter for birds. Evergreen

aka Tussock, NZ Sedge

This native 'grass' is really tough and hardy tolerating cold winds and almost any soil. The brick-orange foliage looks very graceful as it waves and dances in the wind. Ideal for planting in large drifts. If the clumps become a little untidy just chop back hard for renewed vigour. Evergreen.

Carpodetus serratus prostrate is a semi-prostrate form of Putaputaweta which can grow to a height of 75 cm and have a spread of a 1 m. It prefers damp and shade. In spring it can be covered in small white flowers. (summer). Prefers damp soils, sun or shade.

Native. White Kaka Beak. Gorgeous, cool ivory white 'Kaka-beak' flowers hang in pendulous clusters from spring through to summer. The blooms are filled with nectar and attractive to birds. Delicate light-green ferny foliage. Quick growing. Practice slug and caterpillar control. Evergreen.

Native. A fabulous foliage plant with clean shiny foliage that has golden tones in summer. As autumn approaches and the temperatures drop the foliage gradually changes to tones of deep orange and fiery red. Will grow just about anywhere but needs protection from harsh frost. Evergreen. PVR1086.

'Evening Glow' will benefit from a hair cut every now and then. This is best done around about February on a warm dry day.

NZ Native. This form was discovered on cliffs near Hawera. It is a ground hugging native that forms a tight mat of small narrow olive green leaves. Excellent landscape plant for covering large areas of ground. Hardy, tolerant of cold and wind. Evergreen.

Native. This shade loving herbaceous ground cover also loves the damp. Found at the base of waterfalls and along streams and gullies so plant where consistent moisture is available. Filtered light will bring out the bronze tones but full shade is enjoyed by this lovely native perennial. Looks great co planted with ferns. Evergreen.

Native. This fabulous little Hebe must have earned its name because it is a star performer. Glossy green foliage, a neat and tidy habit and beautiful deep violet-blue flowers from October to January. Grow in a sunny spot in well drained soil. Trim lightly after flowering. Evergreen.

This Hebe has a low spreading habit making it useful as a ground-cover. The small dark green leaves and attractive burgundy tones which deepen in cooler weather. Pretty racemes of bright pink flowers appear in abundance in autumn and winter. Plant in a sunny well drained spot. Evergreen.

Native. Manuka AKA Tea Tree. Exquisite double flowers that start appearing in late winter and continue through to the spring. The flowers are in tones of burgundy-red and are complemented by the dainty deep bronze aromatic foliage. Happy in the sun. Evergreen.

Native. The NZ Iris is an attractive clump forming perennial with spears of fresh green foliage. In summer white 'butterfly' flowers dance above the leaves on stiff, wiry stems. These are followed by ornamental seed pods. Well worth planting and easy to grow. Evergreen.

This little Iris has to be one of my favourite NZ natives as it has such dainty white "butterfly" flowers. The narrow sword like leaves form a strong clump, the flowers appear in summer followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow in average soil in a sunny position. Evergreen.

A native perennial with narrow spears of bronze green foliage that turns orange-brown in winter. Wiry stems of dainty white 'butterfly' flowers appear in spring and summer. Prefers a semi-shaded position and acid soil. Evergreen.

A spreading, deciduous shrub that can add interest to any garden and works well contrasted with bold foliage. Brown zig-zag stems with small heart shaped green leaves. A unique habit of growth and foliage makes for a great feature shrub or mass planted. Extremely hardy.

Can be used as a low informal hedge or clipped to shape for a more formal hedge and sculptural topiary.

Here's something just a bit different to add contrast and texture to your planting schemes. Golden stems covered with tiny dark green leaves twist and turn to form a mat of dark green. Dainty yellow flowers in summer sometimes followed by black berries.

A very popular tree which is fast growing and frequently used for hedging, shelter and as a singular specimen tree The leaves, have a lemon scent when crushed. Cream yellow flowers. Hardy to just about everything including attacks by oppossums. Evergreen.

Native. Kohuhu. This form of one of our favourite native shrubs has soft jade green foliage and a neat compact habit. Easy to grow in sun or part shade. Will do best with fertile well drained soil. Responds well to trimming so is useful for hedging and screens. Hardy and evergreen.

A particularly nice form of Pittosporum with fresh green glossy foliage that always looks good. Perfect plant for screens and hedging as it responds well to clipping. Happiest in sun or part shade and likes well drained fertile soil, is tolerant of less than ideal conditions. Hardy and evergreen.

Pittosporums bloom in spring with inconspicuous dark purple-brown flowers that will only come to your attention when you notice their strong fragrance on the evening air.

NZ Native. This shrub is very well named - the tiny rounded leaves are a pale silvery green and certainly do seem to shimmer in the light. Forms a very nice background plant or can be used for hedging and topiary as it loves a regular hair-cut. Easy to grow in a sunny well drained spot. Evergreen.

Native. Tasman Ruffles has a bushy habit. The leaves are jade green with ruffled edges and the stems are coloured dark reddish black. Great for hedging. Plant in sun to part shade in well drained soil. Evergreen.

Native. Dainty deep green small leaves that quickly form a low mat of tight foliage. In spring and summer myriads of starry shaped white flowers dance above the foliage, followed by fleshy purple berries. Native. The little crowded leaves of this moss-like plant pack together to form undulating mounds of foliage that gradually spread. Looks superb in shingle or gravel gardens set amongst larger rocks. Happiest in morning sun and must have good drainage. Evergreen.

Native. Commonly known as Coastal Kowhai which immediately gives you a clue to this plants natural habitat i.e. coastal forests. Dark green foliage and bright yellow, fragrant flowers from late winter to spring. Will grow in sun or part shade. Semi-evergreen.

This form of Kowhai should be evergreen but occasionally when the weather is extreme it may drop some foliage.

If you want a well behaved, rewarding evergreen shrub then it would be hard to go past this delightful little Kowhai. Compact and tidy and completely covered in rich yellow bells in late winter that birds love, especially Tui and Waxeyes. Easy to grow in sun or part shade. Evergreen

Native. A distinctive form of the popular Kowhai with tangled, twisted, branches with small olive green leaves. Forms a little mounding hummock. The yellow flowers appear in spring but can be hidden amongst the branches. An interesting rather than beautiful form but I rather like it. Evergreen.

Native. The floral emblem of NZ and loved by Tuis and gardeners alike. The native name Kowhai means yellow and represents the pendulous racemes of nectar filled yellow flowers that appear in spring. This species flowers at a younger age than others. Evergreen.
