aka Hen and Chicken Fern

This NZ native Fern makes a striking cover plant for shady situations. Looks good group planted beneath established trees and is useful to plant with Hostas carrying on the interest after the Hostas have died down. Likes the shade and nice moist humus rich soil. Protect from frost.

A delightful classic Astelia except this one has attractive silvery lime like leaves that arch. Often seen growing in the crutches of trees makes this plants suitable for well drained to dry soil types or pot and tub culture. as it names suggest flowers are fragrant.

This Cordyline has long, upright, slightly arching, pointed leaves of creamy green with a chocolate stripe. It doesn’t develop a bare single stem trunk like alot of other Cordylines and instead tends to develop side shoots that make it denser. Can produce a cream flower. It is compact and clumps. Grown for the interesting twisting branch pattern and soft green foliage set on silver grey stems. Nice compact habit making it an excellent choice for hedging and group planting. The bright yellow spring flowers are followed by yellow/orange berries. So easy to grow. Evergreen.

aka Silver Tree Fern, Ponga, Punga

Native. NZ's iconic national symbol the 'Silver Fern' is relatively easy to grow in a semi-shaded position with humus rich soil and protection from harsh frost. Forms an erect trunk topped off with a crown of green fronds with distinctive silver-white undersides. Evergreen.

It is important that your 'Silver Fern' does not completely dry out in long hot summers. As you will be sitting under it for shade remember to give it a drink when you're having a cold one!

With its masses of Violet flowers in late Spring- Early Summer they will completely cover the foliage and repeat flower again in Autumn. Prefers a sunny position and free draining soil.

Fertilise annually with long term fertiliser and lightly prune as required.

Native. A top performing Hebe with striking variegated foliage that looks good all year round. From spring through until autumn violet-blue spikes of bloom appear and contrast very well with the foliage. Tolerant of high wind and coastal conditions and generally quite hardy. Evergreen.

Evergreen Hebe which is considered one of the best. Hardy, compact with dainty fresh green foliage and short spikes of white flowers which completely smother the plant from late spring through until summer. Happiest in a sunny well drained position. Very disease resistant.

The 'Wiri' series of Hebe have been bred, selected and named by Jack Hobbs of Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens.

This handsome evergreen native forms a slender, erect tapering tree with deep green leaves that have saw-toothed margins. In spring, reddish bottle-brush like flowers appear which provide a nectar feast for native birds. Grows well in average soil in sun or part shade. Avoid harsh frost.

Native. The NZ Iris is an attractive clump forming perennial with spears of fresh green foliage. In summer white 'butterfly' flowers dance above the leaves on stiff, wiry stems. These are followed by ornamental seed pods. Well worth planting and easy to grow. Evergreen.

Generally it is found on lower hills and inland valley floors where soil is fertile and well drained. It is a medium-sized evergreen tree that has small, crinkly leaves that vary from brown-green to bronze-red. Loves a warm climate thats moist and sheltered from hot winds. Evergreen. Native.

An evergreen NZ native with distinctive small green leaves. The margins are finely and bluntly serrated. Young Spring growth is pale green against the silvery whittish trunk. A nice specimen to have amoungst a woodland garden. Will take sandy, loamy and heavy clay soils as long as well drained.

An evergreen NZ native that is extremely decorative with its glossy, dark green leaves that colour in Winter. A great forest tree in lowland dry areas with a dark sooty trunk. As it matures it develops into a slender tree. Wind hardier than other native beechs.
