Alba. An ancient rose AKA White Rose of York which can be traced back to the 15th century. The summer blooms are double, fragrant and creamy white followed by orange hips. Foliage is a pale grey-green. Always a pleasing sight when in full flower. Disease resistant and needs little pruning

Alba. Introduced to Britain by the Romans this historic rose has pure white semi-double flowers followed by attractive hips in autumn. Sweetly scented. Suitable for hedging or can be used as a small climber. A simple yet beautiful rose. AKA The White Rose of York.

Rambler. Albertine is a well loved rose and I am certainly a dedicated fan. Always admired as in full bloom it is quite a breath taking sight. Very fragrant, double, loose, salmon pink flowers produced en masse in the spring. Vigorous growth. Just a few flowers in autumn. Award winner. 1921.

Albertine is best suited to a wall or a fence and as it flowers mostly on older wood it is best to only prune sparingly. Though this rose mainly flowers in the spring there are so many flowers and for quite a long period it is well worth growing.

Climber. An unusual and very beautiful climbing rose that flowers in spring or early summer only. The double, quartered and fragrant flowers are a rich mixture of yellow and apricot orange. Healthy dark bronze green foliage. Will tolerate some shade and looks lovely scrambling up a tree. 1956.

This rose is sometimes confused with Monsieur Tillier and vice versa as they are very similar in appearance however they are definitely different. Archiduc Joseph was named after a great plant collector - Archduke Joseph of Austro-Hungary.

China. A perfect little button-hole rose, simply charming. Almost always in flower with small perfect pink blooms that open from long pointed buds. Fragrance is light, sweet and spicy. Relatively few thorns and healthy foliage. This climbing sport is quite vigorous and will tolerate some shade. 1894.

Alba. We don't know the origin or age of this rose but we do know that is really lovely when it flowers in summer. The blooms are set on reddish stems against grey-green foliage. They are sweetly scented. softest pink, open and cupped. Red hips follow the blooms. Tolerant and hardy.

Climber Noisette. A summer flowering small climber with spicy scented flowers of primrose yellow. The quartered frilly blooms have a green button eye. We have this in our garden and it performs well. Repeats intermittently until autumn. 1842.

Patio. This rose is definitely a little honey. Exquisite warm apricot-salmon buds opening to a non fading honey apricot shade. Very strong healthy bush and clean grower. Would look fantastic in a terracotta pot or as a border plant.

Floribunda. Large trusses of flowers which are pale apricot in the centre fading to cream at the outside. Healthy and vigorous with shiny dark green leaves. Repeat flowering.

Moss. A beautiful Rose which was discovered in Switzerland in the 1820's. The clear pink blooms are sweetly scented, fully double and cupped. Flowers in summer and should be pruned after flowering. Slightly drooping habit but quite hardy all the same.

The buds are said to look like a 'cocked hat' hence the name Chapeau De Napoleon or 'Napoleon's Hat'. Not sure what the little general would think about that, mind you he did love Josephine and she in turn had a passion for roses.......

Austin. Described by David Austin as "their finest white rose to date" and appropriately named after his daughter Claire. Buds of pale lemon open to large white blooms with petals arranged in concentric circles. The plentiful blooms are very fragrant. Excellent disease resistance. 2011.

Claire Austin is also an established nursery woman growing perennials. Her book "Irises- A Gardeners Encyclopedia" is a "must have" for any Iris grower.

Native. A tough, hardy shrub discovered by the late Mike Geenty in the Waikato. A top plant for hedging or background planting. Attractive olive-green leaves, small yellow flowers in spring followed by red berries that birds love. Tolerates regular trimming. Evergreen.

This very desirable Daphne has glossy green leathery foliage and tight clusters of creamy white blooms with a gorgeous fragrance. The blooms appear in late winter. Plant in semi-shade in nice rich soil, avoid Lime.

Your Daphne will do well if you avoid root disturbance. They generally prefer semi-shade and cool lime free soil with good drainage. If you do not have just the right spot in the garden plant one in a container and place where you will enjoy the delicious perfume.
