Search Alnus
ALNUS aka Alder is a tree or large shrub that will enrich soil – when the leaves fall, and through their root systems, alders add nitrogen and other nutrients directly into the soil, making them an important to the ecosystem. Alders have a distinctive rich glossy green leaf that is veined and softly serrated. The Alder flowers (catkins) arrive in the spring before the plants leaf up, and although a deciduous tree, the leaves of most of this species, remain on the tree for a long time. Alders will tolerate most conditions, including sea air and swampy conditions, and with their fast-growing habit they’re a perfect tree for wind breaks, privacy and shelter.
