Cercis, often called Redbuds, are small deciduous trees or large shrubs with an elegant form and brilliant showy flowers and foliage. The reddish-brown bark and the dark zig-zag twig formation of the Cercis, together with the “pea-like” flower and colourful leaves make these trees popular and highly recommended for landscaping. In the spring time, before the leaves appear, light pink to dark magenta clusters of flowers make a brilliant showing along bare branches and even sometimes on the trunk. Cercis prefers a moist, deep, well drained fertile soil in full sun, with shelter from wind.
