aka Red Horse Chestnut

The Red Horse Chestnut is a handsome deciduous tree with large bold foliage. In spring large upright clusters of rosy crimson flowers decorate the whole tree. Wonderful specimen or shade tree. Prefers a sunny sheltered position in soil that does not completely dry out in summer.

aka Horse Chestnut

If you want a game of Conkers then this is the tree for you. The 'Horse Chestnut' is a handsome large tree with bold foliage and huge white, tinged red flowers in spring. The flowers are followed by nuts encased in a distinctive prickly skin. The nuts known as 'conkers' are released in autumn.

This is a very large tree and the height given is a 10 year estimate, it will continue to grow and can live to 300 years! Give it room to grow and it will delight you and your family for generations.

A tough, beautiful, small, deciduous tree that has beautiful red flowers in Spring and dark green Summer foliage. In Autumn the attractive yellow foliage is very showy, with ornamental brown chestnuts. Can be used as a specimen or a street planting. Deciduous.

If you want to sit under soft ferny foliage and look up at fuzzy fluffy carmine red flowers then this is the tree for you. Very pretty specimen tree with a single trunk and good shade canopy. Flowers during summer. Quite quick growing. Prefers a spot sheltered from wind. Deciduous.

Silk Tree. This is a fabulous quick growing tree with a single stem and a good shade canopy making it ideal to relax under on a sleepy summer afternoon. Soft ferny foliage and fluffy fuzzy blooms in warm pink that appear in summer. Plant in a warm sunny position. Deciduous.

Something different and unusual for your plant collection. Just as the new leaves start to appear in spring the whole shrub is smothered in lacy white flowers. These are sometimes followed by edible purple berries. Rich golden and red tones in autumn. Deciduous.

Recently introduced by the JC Raulston Arboretum, this hybrid boasts 5-8cm deep wine red magnolia like flowers. Handsome shrub with lustrous dark green disease resistant foliage; flowering stems are outstanding in vases.

Hornbeam. Ideal tree for hedging or pleaching. Attractive oval green ribbed foliage that has good autumn tones before turning brown. The leaves hold on the tree well into winter. Smooth grey bark, ornamental catkins in spring followed by ornamental winged seed 'nuts'. Deciduous.

An upright narrow form of Hornbeam with oval ribbed green leaves that have good autumn colour, eventually turning brown. The leaves often remain on the tree for quite some time over winter. The tree will gradually broaden with age. Attractive catkins

aka Katsura Tree

One for the connoisseur. A delightful pendulous deciduous tree with fresh green rounded foliage that turns shades of smoky pink and butter yellow in autumn. Also at this time of year the tree gives off a sweet spicy fragrance that some folk say smells like burnt sugar! Definitely a sweetie.

This is a special feature tree with branches that cascade gently to the ground - exceptionally lovely and rarely available. Even looks good bare which is more than I can say for some!

aka Katsura tree

A special deciduous tree with aromatic foliage. The emerging spring leaves are shaded in tones of reddish-bronze before turning a deep green over summer. The leaves are heart shaped and neatly arranged in pairs on multi-stemmed branches. Fantastic autumn colours before leaf fall. Deciduous.

This tree will grow in sun or part shade and prefers a rich soil that does not completely dry out in summer.

aka English Hawthorn

English Hawthorn. A hardy and robust tree with dark green indented foliage and branches that are laden with little, deep rose red flowers in spring. The flowers are followed by red berries much loved by birds. Happiest in the sun. Deciduous. Est.10yr.growth.

Crataegus are in the same plant family as Roses - Rosacea - you'll be able to tell that when you look closely at the flowers.

aka Pink Hawthorn

Pink Hawthorn. Great masses of double, delightful, fragrant pink blooms put on a showy display in late spring. The flowers eventually turn into red berries in the autumn. In the meantime you have an easily grown hardy specimen tree that can be used for shelter as it is wind tolerant. Deciduous.

NZ Fuchsia also known as Kotukutuku. Considered the world’s largest fuchsia. Attractive, small flowers between August and December. They change from greenish-yellow to purple-red.The flowers are rich in nectar and visited by honey-eating birds, especially tuī, bellbirds and silvereyes.

aka Jacaranda

This specimen tree from Brazil is a visual delight when in full flower. In late spring-summer masses of mauve-blue tubular flowers smother the tree followed by decorative seed pods. The ferny green foliage is semi-evergreen when temperatures are cool. Protect from frost.

Jacarandas like a warm sheltered position and well drained soil. In their native Brazil they are considered a tropical evergreen and in NZ they grow really well in warmer parts of the country like the Bay of Plenty. They can be grown in cooler areas if protected from frost whilst young.

Golden raintree is a small, open branched, deciduous tree with a rounded crown. Leaves emerge pinkish bronze to purplish in spring, mature to a bright green in summer and turn yellow in fall. Bright yellow flowers appear in early summer which give way to interesting, brown, papery seed capsules which resemble Chinese lanterns.

Wonderful quick growing shade tree that is tolerant of just about any conditions (including wind), easy to grow. Strong straight stem with smooth greyish bark. Panicles of fragrant lilac flowers in spring followed by berries that birds love. Deep green long narrow leaves. Deciduous.

Dawn Redwood. This ancient Chinese Conifer was rediscovered in the 1940's and is now grown throughout the world. A handsome tree with ferny green foliage and 'shaggy' brown bark. The foliage turns gold-bronze prior to leaf fall. Likes the sun and fertile soil. The Height is 10 year estimate. deciduous.

Empress Tree. A fast growing, highly ornamental tree with large heart shaped green leaves. Brown flower buds formed in autumn open to reveal fox-glove like, trumpet shaped, fragrant blooms in soft lilac. Plant in a sheltered position to avoid wind damage. Otherwise undemanding. Deciduous.

This magnificent looking tree is grown extensively in Japan for the production of high quality paper. It can be cut back hard each year and will re-grow quite quickly and produce enormous leaves but no flowers.

Something just a little different - a deciduous conifer and unlike its other family members happy to grow in swampy wet areas. Attractive soft ferny green foliage in spring, in autumn this turns a warm rusty brown before falling. Fibrous red brown bark and a nice sturdy trunk complete the picture.

Swamp Cypress - Weeping. A unique deciduous conifer that has attractive green ferny foliage that turns golden brown before leaf fall. Interesting fibrous bark and 'knobbly knees' that grow from the roots. This form has pendulous side branches giving the tree a naturally graceful habit.

Taxodium 'McLaren' Falls will grow happily in moist to wet soil but will also tolerate growing in normal garden soil as long as it does not completely dry out in summer. Named for where it was discovered - McLaren Falls in the Kaimai Ranges.
