Hi
Roses
Blair here, Lloyd has been busy this week helping out with the potting so it's my time again to write the newsletter. What a stunning week it's been weather wise, cold clear mornings and beautiful sunny skies. A busy week here with multiple shipments of roses as well as the first of the new tree stock and a few other interesting deliveries.
The new potting shed is all up and running, WiFi finally connected and it's been full steam ahead for all of the team, root pruning, potting and finally getting the new stock onto the nursery beds.
The next few months are some of the busiest of the year with somewhere in the realm of 40K roses and trees to be potted, put on display and dispatched. The team here always get really excited this time of year to see all the new varieties coming in and watching the nursery full up for the year ahead.
The majority of the new season roses that came in this week are bush and climbers so the beds are starting to fill, and we don't have such an empty looking space in the middle of the nursery.
First of the new season deciduous tree stock.
As I mentioned before we have received a small collection of new season trees, the first being a small selection of Prunus (flowering cherries). Some of these were pre-sold but we still have a good selection. Below is just a few of the different varieties available.
Prunus Shirotae Mt Fuji, High works grafted trees at 1.5 metres. Simply gorgeous flowering cherry with large semi-double fragrant white blossoms in mid-spring just as the new foliage starts to emerge.
Prunus Puddum, Both high works grafted at 1.5 meters and low works grafted trees now in stock. Very attractive cherry tree with smooth bark that peels in horizontal layers. Pink nectar laden blossoms, loved by birds, appear late winter on bare branches.
Prunus Persica Cascade, This variety is actually a weeping flowering peach. Glistening white, fully double blossoms on graceful arching branches develop in spring. Loves a sunny well drained spot in the garden.
Prunus Awanui, We received both high works grafted in 1.5 and 1.8 metres. Raised in New Zealand this variety is a little different from a lot of other flowering cherries in that the horizontal branches drape softly almost to ground level if allowed. Prolific single spring blooms in soft baby pink. We have this variety planted at the nursery and a tree in full blossom is absolutely stunning.
Other new stock.
Daphne, We have received in the first of our Daphne Odora Leucanthe and Leucanthe White. Great looking plants with attractive dark green foliage offset by beautiful intensely fragrant flowers in late winter. Most suitable for an area with full sun to dappled light and fertile soil.
Nandina Gulfstream, Highly decorative leafy shrub valued for it's wonderful autumn foliage colour which intensifies at this time of year to brilliant red. Nice compact and well behaved habit so can be used as low hedging.
Nandina Pygmaea, The leaves on this compact shrub are often crinkled, lime green changing to shades of purple, crimson and orange through winter. Grows with very little fuss and is very tolerant of different environments. Looks great group planted in a sunny spot
The shortest day of the year is coming up again, so a perfect time to plant your garlic bulbs. Once planted they will be ready to harvest in approximately 6 months. We still have some in stock for sale, Elephant 5 packs, and Printanor 100gram and 1kg bags.
Peony Tubers on sale.
We currently have Peony Tubers on sale at 50% off, now only $18.50 each. Great selection of flower colours available. It's still a good time to get these in  as they need the cold weather to help produce flowers in spring.
To Stay up to date with all the new products and news follow us on Facebook, Cecelia does a great job of posting new arrivals and items of interest. https://www.facebook.com/WairereNursery/
Have a wonderful weekend!
Cheers Lloyd, Tony and the Wairere team.
