Summer is for chilled Chardie
Hi
Goodness! where do the weeks go, First email newsletter since Christmas and its going to be February in a couple of days
How would you like your Grapes.... fresh, fermented or dried....
Its all about grapes at the moment, well it is for me, of the oak fermented, chilled Chardonnay form. Nothing like a chilled glass of Chardie with your lunch especially when you are soaking up the sun and generally just having some time out.....

OMG without wanting to sound to ancient, I recollect when I was a younger 20ish lad and spent a fair amount of time fermenting containers of grape juice, not to  mention whatever other fruits that I thought that I could turn into some sort of palatable wine. Well perhaps I should called it alcoholic beverage rather than wine.

Now I'm sure that you could use any grape to have a go at making your own homemade vino just like you can make an apple pie outta any apple but if you are a connoisseur then you will know which ones to use. Now a lady that works for me is famous for her apple pie because she used a secret, special blend of her selection of apple varieties, just to get that amazing apple taste. Now if you have grown a surplus of grapes, then try your hand at a homemade Vino. You could even plant a wine grape selection for the next year or so. Perhaps get yourself a fruit drier and turn some some surplus grapes into raisins muscatels or even sultanas.

Vitis vinfera is the proper name of grapes and at home, we have an Albany surprise and a Moore's Diamond grape growing across the porch of our villa. It's there to provide shade for the dogs in the porch in the summer and of course grapes. We have it on a chain and hook effect so that we can lower the vine from the house for maintenance and to repaint. Now it's pretty easy to get a decent crop of your fav grape but the first year should be sending the runners where you want the structure.  once you have the framework then allow every runner to have 2 bunches of grapes and then keep the vine pinched for the rest of the season so the goodness goes into growing huge, fat, juicy grapes. Sweetness will be enhanced as the sugar content in the grape increases, the riper the grapes get. At ripening time remove some of the leaves to allow the sun to naturally ripen the bunches but don't take too many as the plant still requires green leaves to keep making food.

Now if you have a hankering to grow a real wine variety then we do have some of the Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc plants here at the moment.

I was reading the local paper here at Waihi Beach and there was this article about a lady who is a Dahlia enthusiast. She specialised in growing these flowers to perfection for showing. I just admire the dedication and the effort that goes into producing what must be considered a perfect bloom of type, right down to umbrellas to protect the flower and prevents moisture from making any spoiling marks.

However, these are perfect garden plants that produce endless flowers in the summer months when many plants are have a rest or are in between seasons flowering. They are also pretty easy to grow.

Did you know:

Dahlias are native of Mexico, central America and Colombia and belong to the family Asteraceae.

They are brightly coloured displaying most hues except for blue

Declared national flower of Mexico in 1963

Were once grown as a food crop by the Aztecs

Dahlias are a flower that really come into their own at this time of year making for a huge ongoing show in the garden, There are so many types of flower and size of plant but here at the nursery we have a great range of some gorgeous small growing or patio varieties. We also have a good range of the Hammett series that have that stunning purple black foliage and brightly coloured flowers. The dark foliage looks awesome in the garden with other foliage like that of the Euphorbia swan
