Its time to get onto all those projects

Hi

What a wicked frost that we have had this morn but what a stunning day. Seems to me that a frost is always worthwhile for such a perfect day.
Its just been absolutely frantic here but I'm happy to report that slowly but surely we are getting the nursery into alphabetical order. The roses are almost there and we are onto the pip and stone fruit right now, then its onto the ornamental trees.

Get those secateurs out of the closet

Its mid-July and time that those secateurs came out of the closet ... (A.R.S and thats not short for ARS but always really sharp ) so to speak and get those roses pruned  and anything else that needs to be pruned for that matter. There is so much conjecture and myth around pruning that I think that people are just put off or scared to do the deed but let me tell you, few plants ever die from bad pruning, unless you prune the hardest cut of all…. LOL…. at ground level.
Now pruning has to be done prior to leaf burst, so from now on is good timing. Prune only on a lovely fine day as this should avoid any problems with fungal infections.

Roses are all about flowers and hold this thought in your head as you prune, as the harder you cut  back, potentially the less flowers will happen. Usually pruning of roses should be all about the removal of the last of the flowering flush but many out there just deadhead and when it comes to the winter prune there happens to be three flowerings to remove.
The Basic rules are....
The basic rules are really simple and apply to all pruning matters, from roses to fruit tree and the purpose is really always the same. To promote flowers and I have to tell you it’s always those nice young fresh canes that flower the best.
- Remove any diseased or spindly growth.
- Remove any branches that cross over other branches.
- Prune to buds from behind and slightly above the bud at approx 45degree angle.
- Aim for a well shaped and open bush or shrub.
- Usually remove one quarter to one third of the last season’s growth.
- If you are trying to maintain the bush to a certain height then work on replacing old wood with new current season's growth.
Rose Pruning This Weekend
Don't be shy and if you want to attend this weekends rose pruning session and haven't emailed, its no problem, just come on out at the sessions time . Bring all your questions and we will do our best to answer them.
I know that the chappie and chapesses  from the rose society are coming out on their weekend early so if you want help with rose choices, arrive early or hang around after the pruning session. They are passionate about roses and passionate about sharing the love.

Rose Pruning..... Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway...... LOL

It's been too warm to prune those roses but its time now, well here in Gordonton anyways,  Spring is not that far away now, well there are daffs and earlicheers  out now and that makes for spring ?
Last weekend to attend
Saturday 19/07/2014 at 10am       Sunday 20/07/2014 at 3.30pm with me and the Hamilton Rose Society.

Equip yourself with the right tool....!

Secateurs for the pro...  ARS Alway really sharp are just the best for  pruning. I have given all the team a pair and they just love them.   Remember to spray them with CRC before you use them and after you have finished and they should last you just ages.  Just dont throw them out with the prunings
ARS also have  awesome loppers for that larger cut and their pruning saws are just wicked for cleaning out the base of those rose bushes. These are all tools that we use in the nursery
Gloves also make the job a tad easier for those prickly roses... Check out the gloves with a sleeve or you can get just the sleeve that you can match up with you normal gloves.

Last weekend of the school Hols

I have to say what an awesome team that I have and today not only have they worked hard but at the end of the day they presented myself and the old boy (Pete in the cottage) with a beautifully framed pic of our dear Aunt.  What a special note to finish the working week on. To my team, I say a very heartfelt thanks and wish everyone a excellent weekend, hope that someone does something special for you and get that onto all that pruning!!!

Have a great weekend!
Lloyd, Harry and the Wairere Team

Make it a Wairere weekend where even GNOMES know that gardening's not a drag.
