Hi
Its been that kinda of day, typical spring, wind, rain and all the weather in between. Harry has man flu and I'm sure that you know the lines, "well you never got it as bad as I have". I laugh and just say "harden up and get yourself outta bed", well that was a much sympathy as I got when I had man flu the week before... Rose in accounts laughs at us blokes saying that a simple head cold and we think that we have a decent dose of influenza... but there you go ... the difference between girls and boys!!
No man flu holds up the progress in the nursery though and its the time of year that plants just keep rolling in and all such exciting stuff. The garden has to be brought up to scratch and we just love doing it, just because its that's time of year and it should be gorgeous for us, our clients to enjoy and garden rambles.
I know that the weather can be a tad unpleasant (you won't melt, at least that is what I tell my team) but this is why, here in the Waikato, we grow such fabulous gardens and its all about the amount of rain.
We have been in the garden in all these squally showers, remaking all the paths and throwing around copious layers of mulch to exclude the weeds. Have even been doing a bit of replanting and on that note its a great time to plant. The soil is nice and moist and its just perfect for planting all the smalls, colour or fluff call it what you will.
Roses and Wairere on Facebook
Roses, Roses, Roses and they are the most stunning plants this year. I'm not sure whether they are early or not but every day that I walk past them to the office and there are more in flower. I have been taking those pretty rose head shots on my fone and posting them up to facebook. Its taken a while to get my head around facebook (must be my age) but must keep up with the times and they do look pretty cool up there on the Wairere page. These pics here are from one of my first postings and if you follow the link to see this morns upload. Its neat to be able to share pics as they come into flower.
From left to right they are Glamis Castle, Happy Child, Tamora, couldn't resist throwing in Devonensis the quintessential old worlde rose and finally The Herbalist.
King ferns, These are just so prehistoric looking and if you are a bit of a plant nerd like myself , will just love them. Anthony Wairere's garden designer has a couple of these growing in quite large pots in a dappled light position and out of the frost and they are very cool. in my bid to enthuse my readers in the use of Botanic names, ( really they are no so difficult) King ferns are correctly Marratia salicina. The photo below is one I took of the base of these in the bush in Rarotonga where they appeared to grow in abundance.
Sparaxis, these are a blast from the past and first time that I have seen the bulbs in flower in pots. Brightly coloured and a great show. Easily grown and will naturalise happily in a sunny well drained spot.
Dicentra spectabilis or probably known as Love lies bleeding, this is a classic perennial that has popped up again after the winter and will delight all that know her with those fab bleeding heart like flowers and if you ask me pretty cool foliage.
Dampiera purpurea l didn't know this one and off course just had to get it in, pretty with deep purple flowers and a small habit and looks like its pretty easy to grow. Full sun and good drainage is the way to go.
Winter Rose Helleborus Tutu Ballet awesome plants 24.99 but Harry managed despite his man flu to negotaite another deal of more of these so out they go at $12.99. These plants are full bushy and in flower and would make a fantastic look mass planted. Be in though as this will be the end of them after these go
Colour, Fluff, Perennials, Fillers, Call it what you will, its all in now!
Its really great planting weather and the time to get all those fillers in. The ground is nice and moist, the weather is warmish and other than being a bit wet for doing the job its just the time to get all those lavenders or daisys that are going to give you all your colour for the next few months. Harry is champing at the bit to plant Zucchinis, pumpkins and the like and I need to replant our herb garden at home as I just love cooking with fresh herbs.
Put this one in your diary
