Hi
Mourning the passing of summer...
I sat down to type this weeks newsletter and as I am composing my thoughts I am looking out across the carpark at the changes that are starting to happen around the nursery. Autumn is arriving.. this week the mornings have had a crisp freshness to them and the leaf colour has started changing in some of the trees. In particular the avenue of Prunus Awanui behind the shop seems to be heralding autumn with a blow horn and I feel that I want to push the mute button on it's symphony, as I am not yet ready for summer to be over. But time marches on and already Harry has changed the irrigation system to account for the extra rain we are getting and the nursery is overflowing with
Camellias,
Azaleas,
Michelias and
Rhododenderons which is a classic indicator that autumn is here. Summer was like a friend who could only visit for a short time but I was perhaps so busy I didn't really give that friend the attention it deserved. Oops. On a brighter note that means I have been busy on all fronts and it isn't surprising that the year is disappearing just as fast as the ones that came before it.
The shop has had a lick of fresh paint on the woodwork to get it ready for winter and we are continuing to lay new weed cloth in some of the bays and of course there is always plenty to do in the garden itself like topdressing with
bioboost on the lawns and many of the plants as a final feed before winter.
Do you have a Mum in a Million?
I'm sure you do and to celebrate that, there is a rose that is simply out of this world that has been named for that very reason, what better gift for your mum than a beautiful reminder of how much you appreciate her! This rose is 1 in a million also as it is bred to be disease resistant, prolific in its bloom and deliciously fragrant to boot. We will have a very limited number of these roses ready for Mothers Day again this year so if you missed out last year or just want one for your mum then get your order done online now to ensure you don't miss out this year!

We also have 25% off all bush roses currently in stock and as it is Easter we have decided it is a good time to reduce all standard roses to 50% off marked price as well. This will be 50% off all Pillars, Standard Weeping, Patio and the usual 90cm standards and lets throw in the climbing roses as well. You can see them all by visiting the Family Deals section on the website by clicking the Family Deals heading above or click the rose category on the website and pick the type of rose you are wanting or simply type it's name in the search bar.
We also have a range of pots on sale for 50% off marked price ranging in colour, size and shape making this an excellent opportunity to create a focal point in your garden or start a container garden or just upsize your current pots for plants that may have outgrown their current ones.
Getting the best from our Newsletters?
Many of you are new to our newsletter so I thought I would mention that all the bold underlined words are links to either our website, where you can find out more information about the plants mentioned or even put an order in if you want to buy them, or to our Facebook page where we usually have pics or stories that are of interest. Most of the plant pictures show the plant name if you hold your cursor over the picture for a couple of seconds. Try it on the pictures above you will see the plants name displayed.
The newsletter is also available to view on our website under the heading 'What's Growing On'. The current newsletter will show at the top of the page but when you scroll down you will see past issues.
And a wee tip for when you are viewing our plants on the website, you can show all plants in a category or search that has more than one page of plants. Just go to the top of the webpage, just below the main headings and you will see a number with an arrow next to the words 'per page'. Click the arrow and select 'All' and then all the plants will be displayed on a scrolling page. This is often the easiest way to select same coloured plants of the same type i.e. pink roses.
These tips hopefully make your browsing easier.
It is always nice to receive feedback from our readers. Last week we mentioned quince in the newsletter and this is a comment we had back and thought was worth sharing.
I always enjoy reading your weekly news. Your mention of
quinces this time inspired me to write back to you for once.
I have a number of espaliered fruit trees but the quince
is easily the star of them all. It lent itself really willingly to the pruning
and shaping required and was by far the quickest to reach the top wire. It bears good fruit and I have also made
paste but because last year's batch is going to last us about a decade, this
year the fruit is going to end up in crumbles, shortcakes and tarts. With a glass of late harvest reisling a
quince crumble has to be a food match made in heaven!
I've had some lovely plants from you over the last few
years. Thanks for being there!
Regards
Caroline from Kaikohe

Just a reminder that Good Friday is one of the few days when we are closed. We are open the rest of the long weekend including Easter Sunday and Monday for our usual hours of 8.30 am to 5 pm. Our website is online and useable 24/7 so you are able to shop online on Good Friday and any other time that suits you. Friday online shoppers will of course get the first pick of the standards roses and climbers at the newly discounted rate of 50% off.
Online shopping dispatch will have a shorter window around Easter due to the two short working weeks so orders will have to be in by Tuesday prior to good Friday and again just two dispatch days after Easter Mon.
Also better say Happy Birthday to Pete, he even baked us all muffins for morning tea, so thanks Pete and
Lloyd, Harry and the Wairere Team hope you have a chocolate filled Easter with lots of time for family and friends and of course enjoying the beauty and serenity all your hard work in the garden has achieved, preferably while sipping your favourite alcoholic beverage with said family and friends. If you are travelling please do take care, give yourselves time for a safe and enjoyable trip. If you are going past do stop in.
Make it a Wairere weekend where even
GNOMES know that gardening's not a drag
