Hi

Autumn Harvest

Feijoas
I love the aroma and flavour of fresh feijoas, it is a magnet for foodies, with their pungent aroma and strong complex flavour feijoas demand creativity in their culinary use which we as New Zealanders have apparently picked up with a fervour. We have made them into ice cream, yogurt, smoothies, fruit drinks, jam and even vodka (42 below) and the chutney made with them can be to die for.  Pete has taken up the challenge of the feijoas and makes a number of delicious offerings, Feijoa and Pear muffins or Pete's Feijoa Cake and I am partial to the Feijoa Nut Crumble.  Peeling a small fruit and eating whole is a particularly sensual way of eating a feijoa, this is called a 'feijoa bomb'  or you can just eat it with a spoon like every one else.

This hardy and robust plant is so easy to grow and willingly provides you with oodles of fruit from autumn to early winter each year. Their delightful bright red flowers, which appear around Christmas time add to their appeal as a garden plant while as a food Feijoas are an excellent source of hydration for the body and provide soluble fibre to combat toxins in the digestive system.

Acca sellowiana or Feijoa, as we all know it,  can be planted all year round but autumn is ideal as this allows the roots to establish themselves over winter in preparation for a growth spurt in spring. Pick a sunny spot with free draining soil and don't forget to give your plant a stake for some support if you are planting it in a windy area to reduce movement on its roots.  Feijoas are hardy and fully clipable which makes them an excellent option if you are wanting a fantastic hedge that will tolerate both wind and coastal conditions. They can also be planted in containers, in groups in an orchard, or blended into ornamental garden plantings and because they are frost tolerant they are a fruiting option for cooler areas of the country.  Trees  mature to 2-3m high and approx 1.5-2m wide.
Pollination is often a topic that is on peoples minds and we often have people come in asking for male and female plants but with feijoas you only need a different feijoa close by that flowers around the same time to ensure pollination.  If you aren't sure what feijoa you need check out this variety chart.

I know I have been talking about hedging a lot lately but it is a big part of a gardens make up and I feel it deserves plenty of attention as there are so many different plants that are suitable for the hedge you need.  One of these that may not be well known is Escallonia.  Masses of sweetly scented summer to autumn blooms amid spicily aromatic glossy green leaves put escallonia among the showiest of ornamental shrubs.  Add to this their tolerance of sandy soils, salt laden coastal winds and it's drought resistance and you get a plant that makes an excellent hedge option.  Top this off with the white, pink or red nectar filled flowers for the bees and butterflies and you can't really go past escallonia for it's versatility.

Helleborus
Often referred to as either lenton rose or winter rose hellebores are amazingly versatile. They boast a huge flower colour range from greens, whites, creams, pinks to deep reds and every variation in between. They can have solid colours or dual colours and the flowers can be either single or double blooms. The leaves of the helleborus also vary considerably in both colour and form. Depending on the variety the flowers are produced from mid winter through to early spring and these plants are partial shade lovers that can also tolerate full sun.  They like free draining soil ranging from neutral to acid. They look stunning bulk planted under a dormant deciduous tree.

If you are looking for luscious colour to enliven an area of your garden then you cant miss the Azalea range.  They have been bred to re-bloom Spring, through Summer and well into Autumn.   These azaleas are sun tolerant which gives them a huge advantage over traditional azaleas and they are cold hardy to boot.  Like all azaleas, they like an acid soil and well drained soil.  Water your azaleas regularly for the first year after you plant them to ensure they establish a good root system then after that key times are during hot summer months.

Dipladenia
or Mandevilla as it is also known, is a tropical climber that delights with mass colour throughout summer.  These have Red, pink or white trumpet shaped flowers which are produced in abundance.  They make excellent container plants which will give any deck, patio or trellis a display to admire.

The Dipladenia plants now have $5.00 off marked price in our ongoing sale.

Whatever you are planning, have a great weekend.
