Three good frosts to kill the bugs.

Hi

Its still all go... Potting of the trees

Goodness me, Three beaut frosts in a row and yesterday morn I reckon was the hardest yet even though they said on the telly that it was just '0' degrees. Means for numb fingers for the team so I suggest that they run to the gate twice and they will soon warm up but nobody has taken me up on it. Once it warms up and the sun is out , it makes for such a gorgeous day. Most of the roses are now potted and we have started onto the trees with the same gang.  I have even ended up with the nickname Lloydie Baby and nobody but nobody calls me Lloydie let alone Lloydie baby and I not sure how Bev feels about being called Mother Duck. I reckon that Barb though could be easier to wind up  than us ..... as she eyes up the truck driver that goes up and down our drive all day.....
Its quite a mission with the trees as they are quite a lot larger and go into bigger bags but it like being in a lolly shop for me as I just love all the ornamental trees. Yesterday we potted a whole range of Magnolias which would have to be one of my favourite trees. Those huge, stunning, goblet shaped flowers are just awesome and I am guilty of making sure that we have some of every variety possible. I do think that the pure white ones are my favourite but there are some pretty cool pink shades around now as well,  not to mention some stunning dark burgundy ones too. Fascinating as well is that Magnolias have very fragrant roots which is not so widely known but then hey who goes around sniffing the roots of trees!!!  Me...  hehe...

I think that we must have potted a fair few flowering cherries yesterday and today and they are beautiful looking trees. Dogwoods are on their way and its my guess that tomorrow will be a selection of Maples

Is that Rose a Climber or a Rambler

Roses are incredibly diverse and come in almost every shape and form. Modern climbers  tend to have either Floribunda or Hybrid tea shaped flowers but their form seems to be quite stiffly upright and lend themselves to being almost layered, maybe espaliered or tied up against a pillar. A really upright  climber rose that is almost like a super large shrub would be Compassion but when the canes are new you can pull them down and grow them along a wire or something similar. Then the flowers will bloom all along those tied down canes making a spectacular show. Westerland, Dublin bay, Uetersen, Bantry Bay are all good examples of this style of climber.
Lax and more rambling like roses are quite often more old fashioned in style and when you see them amongst the others they look, well rambling. These will almost naturally and softly hug the top of a fence or perhaps even climb a tree. In spring time these make a huge flowering show of gorgeous old fashioned style flowers and Alberic Barbier and Albertine are both good examples. They are both semi evergreen and very disease resistant.

Hybrid Musk are a class of roses that were bred in the early 1900s by a Rev Pemberton and have the unique ability of being suitable as either a shrub or smaller climbers though not always that small. Buff Beauty, Danae, Prosperity and Moonlight  spring to mind as being excellent examples of these.  The beauty of these roses is that if you keep them cut, then they will form quite a good bush or you can train them as a small climber but they aren't as stiffly growing as the modern roses and lend themselves to pergolas and other situations. The hybrid Musks are known for being tough and hardy and can even be tolerant of less sun than what most roses require.

Strawberries  Get them in the ground now, they don't mind the frost.. !

Strawberries are pretty easy to grow  and when you buy them bare root they don't look much. We top and tail them ready for you guys to get into the ground but I still like to clean them prior to planting. This entails removing the brown material and exposes a green like core with the new leaves sitting in the centre. Make sure that the roots are loosened and planted to the top of the roots and just at the base of the core... so to speak.

Peonies If you live in a cold spot then this is the plant for you !!!!
These are a bit of a new plant for us to have and really they just love those cold climates like the south island. Of course there are some pretty cold inland north island places that they will grow happily.  We have a a friend Jan that lives in Rotorua and in her  or should I say their garden, they have the most gorgeous peony growing, but by contrast they have almost subtropical plants growing. Its all about micro climates. I have another client that was determined to flower one of these beauties in the Waikato  and succeeded with the addition of ice cubes through the winter. We have some of these coming closer to when they start to emerge from the pots but if you are keen to give them a go, you can pre order them.

New website look but still some more to be done

Google keeps everyone on their toes and we are not exempt and to the end we have updated our web site as Google wants us to have our website to be device friendly...... thats for all those that use their phones and ipads  to surf the net on their favourite websites. Its been a bigger project than we all thought so if you have any problems or have suggestions then please flick us an email so that our IT guy can sort it.  If you are shopping or just cruising around online then please do try to log on as yourself.

We are potting trees over the weekend and then there will be a break for the week before the next lot arrives... thats our weekend. The garden centre is starting to look full to the brim of gorgeous trees and roses, so if you have a hankering to cruise around then now is a perfect time to check things out. If you are in the garden, its a good time to get it sorted, shift plants around and plan for new additions.
What ever you are up to, have a good one!

Cheers

Lloyd, Harry and the Wairere Team

Make it a Wairere weekend where even GNOMES know that gardening's not a drag
