Hi

Licensed to drive (just not a tractor)!

There is nothing quite like being the source of entertainment while the rest of the team are at lunch.
The old Massy Ferg is really Harry's Baby and he seems to be able to coordinate its idiosyncrasies with ease and let me tell you that it has quite a few. I have to face the facts that multi tasking gears, ancient hydraulics for a tip bucket and aiming to get a bucket of potting mix or three onto a potting table won't ever be my first skill. It doesn't help to have Barb screeching from the sidelines....... "Look at that concentration".

I have the rather tragic reputation from years back of actually getting a tractor stuck in a very flat car park trying to load scoria onto a clients trailer.  I finally had to get Harry to rescue me from this embarrassing situation and he had to drive some kms as he wasn't at the site. My boss at the time kinda gave that look as if to say what kinda bloke are you, but hey, we are not all good at everything.

Well if loading the bench with soil indicates that we are doing another serious pot, then you are right on the money as a very large container of trees arrived yesterday and we are in full swing over the weekend. I think that its the biggest container that we have ever had sitting there to be unloaded but we are on the way now.
Harry is here today to keep that potting mix on the bench in a far more relaxed an efficient manner than I could ever muster. I'll stick to the potting job every time.

Well if you are into trees and plants then you can imagine it is just like opening a giant chocolate box. These are awesome quality trees and the first plants out of the container have been the dual grafted plums. The advantage of a double grafted tree is that you only need one tree and this year we have a few to choose from - Black Doris with Santa rosa,  Hawera with Burbank are some examples. As usual they are just amazing stock. There are some really nice high worked Prunus or Flowering Cherries as most know them.  The Awanui cherries that I potted yesterday look amazing so if you are looking for a pretty avenue tree then check these out or check out the other cherries online as there is a good range to choose from.

If you are looking at trees online then its worth noting that we can't courier the ones that are too high. They just won't fit into the courier company's cages and vans and so we have to look to truck them if that is possible. Of course you are welcome to come and collect if you are able but if you have a bit of a drive then give us a call or email and we can put them aside ready for you.

Have you got your pruning gear sorted.
The frosts have arrived in Hamilton so for us at least it is time to prune the roses and any deciduous trees that need a shape up.  For this to cause the least damage to your plants your tools need to be well cleaned, sharp and cutting correctly.  If there is any gap between the blades of your secateurs or the teeth of your pruning saw are blunt or crooked then this all helps to make uneven cuts that make it hard for the plant to heal itself or just makes the job harder for you to do.  Choose your ARS tool!

Do you want the perfect Bloom, help with Pruning or  Rose Selections?

Come on out to the nursery and spend some time with those that are in the know.  Join us at the Garden centre Sat 18th July and Sun 19th July between 10am and 2pm. I'll even try to organize some coffee and muffins for a cuppa around 11 am each day.
Roses for the garden or Roses to show, whatever is your desire there are those that know and have advice to share on how to achieve the best results.
Trevor, Paul and others from the local Rose society are mad keen to share their love of the rose. They have kindly offered to come to the nursery and be on hand for those that want to know that little bit more. Rose pruning.... what ever you want to know on this subject.  Rose selection.... what roses are tough and hardy, those that would be excellent garden selections or if you're really keen to grow the perfect bloom for show, then they are the experts.  Come on out and get it from the experts and find out if they really do use umbrellas over their roses to ensure a perfect bloom!
If you are keen to attend, then email me by reply an indication so that we have some idea of numbers to lloyd@wairere.co.nz

Edibles ready for planting!

Maori potatoes

We have a great selection of Maori potatoes in for you to try.  Sprout these first and get them in early for an early crop.  Great for boiling, steaming or baking, taste great straight out of the hangi.

Broad beans are something that I have never grown before though I remember Dad always having a crop in as they are often ready for harvest when nothing else is. Personally I love broad beans and I remember Dad harvesting them young and cooking them with their skins on then when the beans started to age of popping them out of their skins to get the bean that we all know. Now is the time to get them in as they don't like the heat of summer. Plant them at 10 to 12 cm apart and approx 5cm deep.

Yams belong to the Oxalis family and need to be planted after the frosts have passed, get them going early in pots or just let them sprout and plant directly once the frosts have past.

Shallots are a versatile perennial bulb that has a mild sweet taste compared to its close relative the Onion. When planting do not bury the bulb too deep - 1 bulb should multiply to 6-12 bulbs which are harvested when the green tops wilt and turn brown usually in autumn. Dry in the sun prior to storage.  The green tops of your Shallots can be used like chives for salads etc if you wish.  Shallots are shallow rooted so it is important that they get even moisture for good yields i.e. do not let them dry out.  They will store for up to 12 months after drying.

Must have plant

Calycanthus Hartlage Wine, recently introduced by the JC Raulston Arboretum has deep wine red magnolia like flowers. If you are looking for a handsome shrub with lustrous dark green disease resistant foliage with flowering stems that are outstanding in vases you cant go past this one.

You may have noticed that we have a new look to our website now.  Google keeps everyone on their toes and we are not exempt and to this end we have updated our web site to ensure our website is fully device friendly...... that's for all those of you that use your phones and tablets to surf the net on your favourite website.
