Hi
It's always awesome to get feedback about our email and this response I just had to share as it made me laugh and I guess shows so clearly that all us locals know what the volunteer fire service siren sounds like but not our foreign tourists. Nick who shared this story is quite a card and I can so vividly see this in action.
"Loved the warning tale: we have a bach at National park and had German
tourists staying when the volunteer fire-service siren went off. They
thought it was a volcano warning and started evacuating. Priceless.
They were a bit put out when I laughed and laughed. And really put out
when they asked what the warning signal was and I said 'a big bang followed by
the smell of sulphur'.
Happy days! "
Back in the nursery our usual dog groomer has been unable to trim Lucy and Holly and the latest trim left the Scottie Lucy with the most unfortunate haircut and she looked more tubby than she actually is..... well not really.... my comment was that she looked liked a Kune kune pig and decided for her that she was going on a diet.
I have to say that the first day she looked at that bowl of diet biscuits as if to say ... not really where is my dog roll that I so love. She then ran to all the other dog bowls looking for that dog roll and then finally reconciled herself to those biscuits.
I was chatting to another client Penny who has a Scottie too and this dog looks really svelte compared to my Lucy and we both decided that these cute dogs were obsessed with food. She was telling me a tale about walking her Scottie off the lead, who jumped up onto a table to pinch a pie from some picnickers...... much to her embarrassment. OMG I was laughing hard as I could just imagine Lucy doing the very same thing. On that positive note, a couple of weeks of healthy living later I reckon that Lucy has way more energy than she normally has... well as much as those very short legs manage.
Harry is on one of those projects at the moment .... think that we should call it uncluttering and I guess having been here for 25 years it could be fair to say that there is some clutter. One of the areas to be decluttered is to create new office space in one of the rooms. While doing so Harry found some rose books that brother Peter, who in the day managed a publishing company, had sold us, hence why we have books originally with a retail of $49.99 and $69.99 these to clear at just $10. These books are full of gorgeous pics as you would expect rose books to be but they are full of different ideas on how to use roses in your garden either as focal or incorporated plants.
Now Peter Beales Encyclopedia has always been a bible of mine from when we started this nursery so imagine this book to be a goodie.
Novelty Birds Harry says that these must go.... all just half price... These are cute and just for fun... Great for a kids room or just nodding away in a conservatory or porch...
There are some new generations of of Daphne out there and I reckon that they are a bit different from the classic forms that we all know so well. For a start Eternal Fragrance will tolerate semi shade to higher light levels than our
leucanthe forms and they like to be kept much drier. The leaves tend to be smaller as are the flowers but still packs a punch of perfume. Now Perfume Princess is a Bohlua hybrid and as such is a taller variety with a fantastic perfume. Likes a dapple light position and soil moisture levels just like our traditional Daphnes.
Now Daphnes seem to be in limited numbers and we only have a few
Eternal Fragrance and limited number of
Perfume Princess so get you order in first up best dressed so to speak. If you have a hankering for some classic Daphnes or even more other cultivars then check out the Daphne page and pre order yours. No garden is complete without a fragrant Daphne lurking somewhere.
To recap most Daphne like a position where they get the morning sun and not the arvo sun, good rich soil that is neither too wet or dry.. a tad fussy but well worth the effort.
Its Autumns planting weather
The official beginning of Autumn and what a good drop of rain I can see the grass growing in fact it was so cool the other morn that I thought that its definitely a season change. Now I know that you can plant a containerised plant any time of year as long as you provide water but Autumn is natures best time as the ground is moist and still really warm.
Photinia 6 packs are back great for a quick economic hedge just in time for autumn, the best planting time.
Feijoa season is looming and I so love them, if you need some plants there are some great varieties here at the moment.. check them out on facebook.
Hedging Camellias are on their way, will talk about them next week.
For the plants nuts out there
Abelia Sunshine Daydream... this one is a new one to me and is quite a colourful variegated form of the old fashioned abelia hedging plant.
Sciadopitys verticillata Dont even try and say this one well give it a go. I not sure that I have it correct so usually just go with Japanese Umbrella pine. sloiw growing and just the coolest conifer one coukld have.. will get quite large in time but woulkd make for an awesom pot plant
Gaura rainbow petite really cool foliage topped with pink flowers that resemble whirling butterflies which unsurprisingly is this ones common name. the neat thing about this cultivar is that its a moire compact form
If you are a bit of an azalea fan then you really have to check out the latest series of the Encore Azaleas, pretty flowers and also more tolerant of higher light positions... what else would we expect from the aussies but heat tolerant
Azaleas or follow the link and check out all out what's new in stock this week.
It is officially autumn so make the most of the warm weather, have a great weekend and love your plants.
cheers
