Hi
The magnolia's are looking so good I just had to take some more pics to show them to you. Spring seems to be arriving early this year, the winter has been mild here in the Waikato and many of the late winter/early spring flowers have begun to bloom. Drive around the area you will notice the
Michelias in bloom and many of the
deciduous Magnolias are looking stunningly picturesque. They seem to bloom at the best time for us as the wind at this time is almost non existent so the blooms hold on the trees that much longer and we are able to plant them in more open areas.
We have moved around some of the displays at the nursery to give the magnolias pride of place in many areas as they are just looking so gorgeous at the moment. We featured the first magnolias in
facebook last week and are doing so again this week. Many were taken this morning and all plants featured are currently in bloom and in stock. I have put links on each post to make it easy for you to find them on Wairere Nursery
website.
As I said in last weeks newsletter, my long term favourite Magnolias is Denudata alba, meaning nude of leaves and pristine white flowers but there are so many more that I want to show you over the next few weeks.
Magnolia Soulangiana and various blood relatives have that what I call classic goblet shaped flowers in shades of white and crimsony red/pink
The Lilifloras and their crosses tend to be smaller growing trees with not quite the same tulip shaped bloom but as I think of as more parrot beak shaped but still a lovely flower.
If you would like a smaller magnolia then the Stellatas and their crosses tend to be smaller and more like a large shrub with pretty, quite starry like flowers.
The largest growing trees are the other species and hybrids of which Star Wars and Iolanthe are beautiful examples and their flowers are often described as cup and saucer style.
Finally I need to mention the beautiful hybrids that come from the Jury stable of which Vulcan is a classic in its deep wine coloured blooms.

Bitter is better.... Cider Apples!
We have had many enquiries about Cider apples recently so though I would give them a mention. We have a good range of Cider Apples here at the nursery. Our selection are all Heritage apples although there are one or two more recent varieties available on the market. Cider apples are not for the eating palate as a rule as there must be a bitter component in these apples to make them good for cider production. We have 3 of the varieties shown below in stock but won't have availability of the others until 2017 season. These are very much in demand so if you are planning on planting cider apples then get your name on the priority list by making a back order for the next seasons crop now. Currently available in small numbers are
Knotted Kernal,
Mother in Law and
Sweet Alford.
Codling moth larvae are the "worm in the apple" that is referred to in many books, but it is not a worm. These codling moth will be on the wing again soon so it is nearly time to put your
codling moth traps out to catch the males to minimise the damage their larvae can do to your apple crop. Warmer areas of New zealand usually have two generations of codling moth each year, and cooler areas just one. They usually appear September through to February.
Geraniums... I am sitting here smelling the most delicious fragrances coming from the leaves of the new scented geranium varieties just in today. They have citrus, nutmeg, fruity and rose scents. These geraniums have been grown with beauty, fragrance, essential oil and culinary use in mind. They certainly hit the spot with the fragrance and beauty, let me know how the essential oil and culinary aspects go! Fragrans has been used to flavour Turkish Delight. Dried leaves make a delightful addition to potpourris and herb pillows. Try adding some leaves to bath water for a relaxing experience.
Flax knives are proving to be very handy round the garden as they are great for cleaning up last years growth on the perennials. The blades are serrated for ease of cutting tough plants and in particular flax leaves which always manage to slide between my secateurs blades if I don't put enough tension on the leaf when cutting it.
Here's hoping for a dry weekend where we can all have a productive time in our gardens,
Lloyd, Harry and the Wairere Team
Make it a Wairere weekend where even
GNOMES know that gardening's not a drag.
