Hi

Keeping active for keeping on in the garden and nursery

I have always been a bit of a swimmer and suddenly decided that it was time to get back into the sport. You know the scenario, another B/Day suddenly clocks past and you think that the years are whizzing by. My work has always been physical and I think... hmm... must do something to maintain that edge to keep me clambering up to trim all the hedges, limbing up the trees, weed spraying and so on.

So on that note, last week it was back to the pool and over the past couple of weeks have managed to get my self back to doing almost a couple of Kms, albeit slowly.

Well this is all good until the morning I was a tad early arriving a couple mins before 6 am when this bloke in the queue starts chatting and we ended up comparing entry passes and the fact the I was just on a 10 swim rate and he apparently had a years pass and I assume that this was a pass to all the facilities.

All was going well and amicable until he was telling me about the saving I could get with the senior rate for the over 65's ... I must have looked aghast as he quickly retracted and asked if I was in my mid 50's as I would of course would have to pay the higher rate... I must not look my best at 6am !!!!

Well over breakfast  I shared the event with Harry, my next big mistake, who just wet himself laughing. If you know Harry such stories are not secret as he shares with all and sundry, laughing hysterically every time he retells the event.

Angela and Harry on a shopping spree....

It would seem that  we jump from the chaotic potting season into the silly season of spring.... I have Angela and Harry buying up a storm to keep the nursery full of exciting and interesting plants to tempt our varied clientele. Huge trucks roll into here with amazing regularity, dropping off plants that those two think that we must have. I have to tell you that having a garden centre is no different  from having a garden and when those reps and catalogues come around, well its like being in a lolly store.

So it Spring time and Spring is all about blossoms and this is not just flowering cherries... or fruit trees but rather shrubs that do their all at this time of year. Spiraeas and I don't know if they have another common name but their spring display is spectacular.. This is another group of cuzzies that belong to the rose family and there are a few  different ones of which we have a few.  Generally these form small shrubs that grow to approx 1.5 high and wide. Pretty in pink is Anthony Water and  Gold Flame which has the added bonus of golden foliage. Its the amount of flowers that is mind blowing and the whites are all spectacular.. check out Cantonensis, Niponica and Prunifolia

Similar to the Spiraeas are the Deutzias but surprisingly they belong to the family of Hydrangeas. Little Nikko is a favourtite that grows into a cute smaller shrub with just masses of white blooms

Spiraeas. Weigelas, Deutzias, Viburnum, whilst not related have in common,  being deciduous shrubs, amazing spring performance and tough and hardy shrubs for the reminder of the year.

Queens of the climbers, Lol and its not just about size but colour too!!
There are clematis and there are clematis and the hybrids steal the show with their gorgeous flowers.. Bigger than most and in a pretty array of colours these look pretty cool grown in Obelisks but also equally at home grown with roses or some other shrub that they can use as support. We have many planted in our Horn beam hedges and its amazing to see those huge blooms pop out the side or on the top.
Its the nature of climbers to use another plant or host as their structure so they can get to the top, see the sun and then flower.

This will be the one and only time that I suggest planting anything deeper than what it is in its container and in the case of Hybrid clematis, this is OK. Most climbers like a cool and undisturbed root run so plant on the south side and growth through to light or sunny side. A rock or such at the base of the plant will protect and cool the soil.
Its also worth planting these beauties with a dressing of friendly fungus or Trichoderma as they are a tad susceptible to wilt fungus, a soil borne fungal infection. Don't despair if they do wilt as often they come back especially if you apply the fungal powder.

Real Blue
Its hard to get that colour of real blue or blue blue, maybe sky blue but the Penstemon True Blue is that gorgeous colour. Its a colour in the plant world that isn't so common and certainly the blue gene doesn't exist in roses.
Now the delphiniums are everyone fav and Delphinium Cobalt Dreams  are also a good blue. Just watch that these queens of the perennial world don't get totally munched off by slugs and snails.
The other Blue perennial that are pretty awesome would have to be the Gentians, Shining blue and Velvet glove.. something to impress your gardening friends.

Scoparium is a wonderful source of bee food. Bees love this tree which means they will help bring bees for pollinating your fruit trees. Bee's have had real problems in recent times with hives dying out so you can reduce feed stress on bees by supplying a loved food source. They look great mass planted and are stunning when they bloom in spring. UMF tested for nectar for manuka honey These are $5.99 each or buy 20 or more for $5 or 50 or more for $4.50

Over and Above at Wairere Nursery page allows you access to plants that are not usually stocked by us due to the large number of varieties available.  Just enter how many of any variety you want and enter your contact details at the bottom of the page and we order them for you and will let you know when they are ready by email. These items are only available for a short period of time so don't take too long to put in your order.  Currently showing are the bearded Iris's.  Clematis's are now available on the website as stocked items.  You can see our stocked variety here.

We can't forget our sponsors, can we!!! and our darling Wairere guys, Harry and Lloyd, and Tony from Garden Graphix  who are sponsoring awards.

Its taken a while to get into the swing of day light saving  but the longer evening hours sure make it easier to get into the garden. I know that its been wet but on the plus side this has been perfect for fertilizing the lawns and gardens. I have sprayed the roses today and done a fair bit of weed spraying just because its been fine and I need to keep on top on the weeds. Enjoy the rest of the week and have a great weekend. For those that are school holidays. Have Fun

Cheers

Lloyd, Harry and the Wairere Team

Make it a Wairere weekend where even GNOMES know that gardening's not a drag.
