There are many plants that lend themselves to being Topiary specimens. Essentially, it is more desirable that the plant is evergreen, that the leaves are fairly small and interesting, that it produces a seasonal flower and, most important, that it responds well to constant pruning.

People imagine that the Art of Topiary is time-consuming and only for those who have that special artistic flair - but that is a myth! Once the shape has been formed initially, it is merely a question of giving it the odd haircut. It is a garden task that can be done with secateurs in one hand - whilst the other hand can hold a glass of chilled Chardonnay!
And as for that artistic flair, you never know until you try. Unleash that inner creativity and give it a go! You may be pleasantly surprised. And at the very worst, you can always let the plant re-grow, like a bad haircut!

aka California Lilac
Std. An attractive evergreen shrub which features sparkling clusters of dark blue flowers in late spring. The shiny foliage turns a deeps ebony shade during winter, changing to dark chocolate-green during spring and summer. Quite hardy and tolerant of wind and cold. PVR 1334.
Ceanothus fix nitrogen from the atmosphere so require no fertiliser.

This bright little standard shrub will add 'sunshine yellow' to your garden in late winter when not much else is in bloom. A fast grower with bright green evergreen foliage that clips well. The pea shaped yellow flowers appear from late winter to early spring. Happy in a well drained sunny spot.

Native. A dwarf compact form of Pittosporum which has glossy foliage in tones of green and gold. Forms a natural rounded shape without the need for lots of trimming though it is quite happy to have a haircut. Suitable for container planting. Sun or part shade, hardy and evergreen.

Native. You'll love this versatile little plant which forms a dense rounded ball of fresh green foliage that seldom needs clipping. Looks fabulous group planted or makes a natural topiary specimen for court-yard containers. Grows well in sun or part shade. PVR.
Pittorsporums love well drained fertile soil but are remarkably tolerant plants and will adapt to less than ideal conditions. They are hardy and generally healthy.
