Rubrum. This upright Canadian Maple eventually grows into a tall tree with a narrow columnar habit. In autumn the leaves turn yellow with splashes of red on the margins. Excellent specimen or avenue tree. Protect from strong prevailing winds. Deciduous.

Give it room to grow and will reward you well. Prefers the sun and deep acid soil but reasonably tolerant and very hardy.

Extremely tolerant, fast growing tree that loves moisture. Attractive heart shaped leaves (hence the name Cordata) that are green and glossy. The male flower catkins appear before the leaves and the female flowers develop into small woody cones. Deciduous.

An Australian variety noted for its smoothness of bark and brilliant autumn tonings. A beautiful specimen or feature tree that provides a blaze of colour in autumn! Now this is really special. A unique form of Liquidambar with a dense, rounded habit. The fresh green summer foliage puts on a vibrant autumn display in tones of red and purple, holding well into winter. Grafted on to a standard that forms a characterful 'corky' trunk. Deciduous.

Plant your Liquidambar in deeply worked soil that does not completely dry out in summer.

Liquidambar rotundiloba is a sterile cultivar and therefore is seedless.

Star Magnolia. One of the earliest magnolias to bloom. A small bushy tree bearing fragrant star shaped white flowers with many petals opening from silky buds in spring. Very beautiful and suitable for a small garden. They need a sheltered spot and fertile, well-drained, acid soil.

Bechtel Crab. This highly ornamental small tree is a firm favourite here at Wairere. Large, double, frilly pink, fragrant blossom decorates the tree in late spring. The summer foliage is a soft sage green and also very decorative. Plant in a sunny spot in well drained soil. Deciduous

This Crabapple does have fruit after flowering - it is small and light yellow and rarely produced in noticeable quantities. It's all about the blossom which is truly beautiful.

aka Oriental Plane Tree

Plane Tree. The world would be a poorer place without the handsome and magnificent Plane Tree. It grows where nothing else will, tolerating pollution and poor conditions. This selection has deeply lobed green summer foliage that turns shades of gold/orange prior to leaf fall. Attractive mottled bark

While the Plane Tree is very tolerant it will reach its maximum potential in nice deeply worked fertile soil. Allow it space to reach its true 'Autumn Glory'.

Raised in NZ, 'Awanui' is a little different from other flowering cherries in that the horizontal branches drape softly almost to ground level. The prolific spring blooms are softest baby pink and single. A tree in full blossom is extremely pretty. Definitely a must have. Deciduous.

aka Holly or Holm Oak

Believe it or not this is actually an Oak tree and its name refers to the fact that the evergreen leaves are like those of an Ilex (Holly). Juvenile leaves tend to be silvery grey and mature to dark green with a downy under side. Very easy to grow. Est.10yr.growth.

If left to mature Quercus ilex forms a very large specimen tree however it can easily be used for hedging if clipped regularly. It grows well in an exposed position, particularly on the coast and makes a good windbreak. Valued through the ages for medicinal purposes.

Do you want something really different to feature in the garden or a container? The twisted contorted branches and lacy foliage of 'Lace Lady' will certainly attract attention. White fragrant flowers may occur in summer and nice yellow autumn foliage. Height will depend on graft. Deciduous.

Robinia are generally tolerant of poor soil but they like moisture and protection from strong wind. Flowering is possible but not guaranteed.
