Wetland. A NZ (Oioi) Reed with fine grey-green needles of foliage with brown markings at intervals along the length of the leaves. Forms a large clump. Grows in water or in damp ground. Tolerates salty water. Very decorative in a pot and useful for floral work. Tough as. Evergreen.

May be toxic to animals.

Native Hair Sedge.. The name Comans means "luxuriant head of hair" and this native Tussock Grass certainly has a fine head of green needle foliage. Tolerant of just about any conditions including coastal. Quickly forms a clump and is invaluable for adding texture to the garden. Evergreen.

Native. A lovely soft bronze- red grass with fine tufts of arching foliage. Grows in a wide range of conditions including coastal. Comans means "like a luxuriant head of hair" hence the common name of 'Hair Sedge'. Looks its best in large drifts. Evergreen.

Native tussock grass with an attractive densely tufted fine bronze foliage. This grass does best in full sun and will grow in quite swampy conditions. Useful for special effects in landscaping when mass planted. Brown flower heads in summer. Evergreen.

NZ Native Grass that is a successful colonising plant often used for wetland planting that can also grow on dry sites making it suitable for planting where the conditions may vary periodically. Virgata is a mass of green needle foliage. Tolerant coastal condition. Evergreen.

Native. This quick growing coprosma creates a mat of rich green foliage. It is easily grown in a sunny position and make an excellent groundcover for banks. Tolerates most soil types, including coastal and exposed sites. Evergreen.

aka Karamu

Native. Commonly known as Karamu this evergreen native shrub has small dark green leaves with pale under-sides. Insignificant pale green flowers are followed by small orange berries that birds love. Easy to grow in sun or part shade with protection from harsh frost. Trim regularly to keep tidy.

Early Maori used Karamu as a food source and of course native birds love the berries. Believe it or not Coprosma are in the same family as the coffee plant but we wouldn't recommend substituting Karamu for your favourite brew!

aka Korokio

Native. Grown for the interesting twisting branch pattern and soft green foliage set on silver grey stems. Nice compact habit making it an excellent choice for hedging and group planting. The bright yellow spring flowers are followed by yellow/orange berries. So easy to grow. Evergreen.

This NZ native conifer can reach over 60m when fully mature but that takes quite some time; our height is for 10 year's growth. Juvenile trees have fine drooping bronze 'needles' which eventually change to a green, more a flattened leaf. Produces berries which are loved by birds. Evergreen.

Native. Ake Ake. A no fuss evergreen foliage shrub that can be used for hedging or background planting. The slightly wavy leaves are shaded purple and bronze and will have better colour if not over-fed or pampered. Will grow just about anywhere except full shade. Evergreen.

aka Hebe or Veronica

This little Hebe hybrid is well named as it is indeed delightful. Fresh green narrow foliage and pretty sprays of white flowers from spring to summer. Sometimes the blooms have just a hint of soft lilac. Always looks neat and tidy. Happy in a sunny well drained position. Evergreen.

Prune your Hebe 'Otari Delight' lightly after flowering to encourage new growth. This Hebe was found as a seedling in Otari-Wilton's Bush in Wellington hence the name.

Fast growing evergreen shrub or small erect tree. Bright green leaves which release volatile oils when crushed. Similar to Manuka but leaves are soft and flowers and seeds are smaller than Manuka. Attractive branching pattern and profuse flowering in summer.

Ribbonwood. A native tree that is worth consideration for any planting scheme. When young the interlacing branches are covered in small dainty leaves. The leaves and whole tree become more graceful upon maturity. Quite easy to grow and remarkably wind tolerant. Deciduous.

Whilst this evergreen native tree will eventually reach 30m it won't happen in your life time as it is very slow growing. A highly valued native with a special place in Maori history. Dense, bronze green, stiff narrow leaves adorn a handsome pyramidal tree. Estimated height after 10 years, 6m.

Native. An extremely handsome foliage shrub with leathery glossy green leaves made up of 3 broad lobes. Good compact habit. Can have a bronze overtone in winter. Looks great in the garden or use as a container plant. Needs protection from harsh frost when young. Evergreen.
