Evergreen perennial that looks a little bit like a cross between and Iris and a grass. The leaves are attractively striped in shades of chartreuse and cream. The foliage is unusually aromatic. Ideal for planting in bog gardens or at the edge of ponds to a depth of 20cm. Prefers sun.

Sweet Flag. This little perennial from Japan forms a clump of flattened green leaves on short rhizomes both of which have a sweet cinnamon fragrance, especially when dried. Ideal for boggy spots or at pond/stream edges. Quite hardy and easy to grow. Semi-evergreen.

aka Ladys Mantle

Alchemilla mollis 'Thriller' is larger and more robust than the species, forming mounds of lobed, grayish-green fuzzy leaves topped by airy yellow flowers in spring. It is best in moist soil in part shade. Great as a groundcover or for cutting.

The common name is the Lady Mantle.The wavy edged leaves are meant to represent the cloak or mantle that covered Mary as she travelled to Bethlehem.

Bred for its compact habit and long flowering period - spring to autumn - this little perennial is definitely a top performer. Large blooms in tones of apricot and peach that would look great combined with terracotta. Plant in sun or semi-shade in well drained soil. Perennial. PVR

The flowers are very pretty in white or pink with purple dots, growing in typical Bergamot fashion. Young leaves can be used in tea or for any gourmet dish, especially fish, where a strong lemon flavour would add interest. An attractive plant that will attract the attention of bees, as well as people, in any herb garden.

A useful and attractive perennial with grey/green foliage and pretty sprays of mauve flowers that appear from spring right through to autumn. Useful as an edging for flower beds. A beautiful Clivia bred by Dr Keith Hammett. Glossy green leaves and fragrant dark orange coloured flowers appear in summer. A wonderful plant for brightening up dry shady spot. Grows best in a shady, frost free site. Tolerates dry soils, water well in summer and keep dry in winter. Perennial.

Superb evergreen perennial for planting under mature trees or in a shady spot. The dark green strap like foliage adds a touch of tropical drama to the garden. Strong stems of deep orange blooms rise above the foliage and add the WOW! Protect from frost.

Comfrey should be termed as a 'super-plant' it can be used as a medicinal herb, tea, vegetable, animal feed and green manure. Tall and wide spreading, it reaches a height of 60 to 90cm. With large, coarse leaves and flowers which are blue or creamy white grow in spikes and bloom all summer. It is easy to grow. Perennial.

A popular perennial with florists because of the sprays of double white fragrant flowers held above the foliage on wiry stems. Does well in a sunny well drained spot. Cut back the first flush of flowers to encourage re-bloom. Doesn't like being moved so choose your planting spot well.

Though Gypsophila is hardy it is seldom very long lived - good drainage and deep alkaline soil that is not too heavy will help it thrive. Calcium and magnesium help keep the pH high and a side dressing of a little Lime wouldn't hurt either.

aka Corkscrew Rush or Crazy Hair

Something a little different! Juncus Spiralis has foliage that twists and turns. This curly variety adds a bit of whimsy to the garden. Great to grow in fun containers such as head shaped pots, great for kids to enjoy because of the plants’ playfulness and irresistibility to touch. Perennial

Don't allow the soil to dry out. Foliage will turn yellow then brown if it gets too dry. It's a good idea to keep your corkscrew rush plant in a pot without a drainage hole. Juncus is native to marsh areas, so it loves soggy soil

If you are looking for fabulous foliage then the leaves of the 'Tractor Seat' Ligularia are hard to beat. Large, glossy, green and textured, the leaves put on an outstanding display in a shady spot. Stems of yellow flowers in autumn-winter. Evergreen.

This plant is commonly known as Ligularia but is more correctly called Farfugium japonicum var giganteum

A lovely grassy plant that will carpet the bottom of your pond. Needs good light in deep water although otherwise easy to grow. Provides good habitat for goldfish and also helps to oxygenate the water. Can reach 10 to 15 cm in height.

Best grown in rich, moist soils in full sun to part shade. Adapts to a wide range of soils except dry ones. Large plantings may be sheared after bloom to remove flower spikes and stimulate new vegetative growth. Soil barriers may be used to restrain spread if plants are grown in borders or other areas where spread is unwanted.

aka Mint Vietnamese or Cambodian mint or laksa leaf

Also known as Vietnamese coriander, Cambodian mint and laksa leaf this has to be my favourite Asian herb. This perennial, which has striking pointed leaves, lime green in colour with dark inner markings. With purple stems the whole plant has a wonderfully strong citrus aroma with a taste to match.

Herb. A highly ornamental and delicious herb that is an essential ingredient in Italian style cuisine. A must have on top of Pizza. Mainly used dry. Plant in a sunny well drained spot and give it a good haircut every now and then. Perennial.

True Greek oregano is the superior, true culinary type of oregano prized by Italian and Greek chefs. It is highly aromatic and flavorful, combining superbly with fresh tomatoes or tomato sauces, egg and cheese combinations such as omelets and quiche, marinated vegetables, meat, fish and poultry.

I can't do without this wonderful Parsley in my vege patch. Large flat leaves that are full of flavour and highly decorative. A lovely garnish and great in a variety of soups, casseroles etc. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil. Fertilize every now and then and harvest regularly. Evergreen.

Ever popular Parsley is probably the most widely used Herb world wide. Full of iron and excellent for eating fresh or dried. Goes with just about everything. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil. Give it a little bit of fertilizer every now and then and harvest regularly. Evergreen.

Peppermint is a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. The plant, indigenous to Europe and the Middle East, is now widespread in cultivation in many regions of the world. It is found wild occasionally with its parent species.

Peppermint is assertive enough to stand up to strong flavours, so it's ideal for chocolate desserts and boldly flavoured dishes.

Gorizia Rosemary was named for the town (Gorizia, Italy) in which it was discovered. A mildew resistant variety, the large, flat leaves of this selection are unusual for Rosemary, making it unique and very appealing. Gorizia has an upright habit and sports large light lavender-blue flowers in spring. Use with meats, vegetables, and bread recipes.

The downy grey-green leaves of this perennial Herb are widely used to add flavour to poultry and pork dishes. Use fresh leaves sparingly as they have quite a strong flavour. Plant in a sunny well drained spot in light sandy soil for best results. Evergreen.

Lemon Thyme is is known to be especially mouth-watering with poultry and in salads. An herb whose scent is regularly described as astonishing, it is super delicious when added to herb butters and herbed bread. IHoneybees love the flowers of the thyme plant! Perennial
