aka Rock Rose

Rock Rose. A lovely little shrub for a sunny border or bank. The grey-green foliage is aromatic and has open faced blooms of pure white, with a crimson blotch and yellow centre making a very showy display in late spring. Prefers well drained soil, can tolerate drought once established. Evergreen.

Cistus should be trimmed lightly after flowering. They prefer a light soil and don't need a lot of feeding.

This 'Smoke Bush' has the most spectacular deep reddish purple leaves that are on fire with shades of orange and red in autumn. Looks best when the sun shines through the foliage. A haze of small inconspicuous flowers appear above the foliage in summer. Easy to grow. Deciduous.

A rare attractive and distinctive shrub. Leathery rounded grey-green leaves. Beautiful very long silver green catkins hang from the branch tips throughout the winter. Frost hardy and easily grown. Tolerates a coastal site. Evergreen.

As a point of interest there are separate Male and Female Garrya plants but the Male is usually grown because it as the longer catkins. An exception to the rule that says 'size doesn't matter.'

Paniculata. An award winning Hydrangea with large conical flower heads that put on a magnificent display in summer-autumn. Flowers open a fresh shade of chartreuse, then gradually turn cream and finally become a deep smoky shade of pink. Best in humus rich soil, sun or part shade. Deciduous.

As this Hydrangea flowers on the new growth it is best pruned in early spring if in fact any pruning is required. If left to grow to its full potential it will put on a stunning display. Quite fast growing - the bloom colour is reliable regardless of the soil pH. Information Pages

This little deciduous shrub would be worth planting for the fragrance alone but it is the pretty pure white double flowers that will probably seduce you. Lovely as a back ground filler. Prune after flowering within a few centimetres of the old wood. Deciduous.

Philadelphus appreciate a side dressing of lime once a year - probably best applied just before spring.
