NZ's iconic native conifer. Slow growing but well worth the wait for the tree to mature into its stately form. When juvenile the foliage tends to have copper bronze tones but as the tree ages green is the more dominant colour. Protect from frost when young. One to plant for your grand children! Evergreen

aka Jointed Rush or Oioi

Wetland. A NZ (Oioi) Reed with fine grey-green needles of foliage with brown markings at intervals along the length of the leaves. Forms a large clump. Grows in water or in damp ground. Tolerates salty water. Very decorative in a pot and useful for floral work. Tough as. Evergreen.

May be toxic to animals.

aka Wineberry or Makomako

Native-Wine Berry-Makomako Serrated green leaves with purple tones to the under-side, clusters of pink flowers in spring which are followed by juicy black berries that birds love. Grows happily in the sun in most soils as long as they are not too dry. Tolerates light frost. Semi-evergreen.

Berries will only occur on the female tree if pollination occurs. The Wine-Berry has separate male and female trees.

Attractive NZ native grass that forms a clump of tussock-like foliage. The leaves are a dark bronze purple. Upright and graceful, looks fabulous planted in large drifts. Hardy to just about any conditions but happiest in a sunny position that does not dry out completely in summer. Evergreen.

Native Hair Sedge.. The name Comans means "luxuriant head of hair" and this native Tussock Grass certainly has a fine head of green needle foliage. Tolerant of just about any conditions including coastal. Quickly forms a clump and is invaluable for adding texture to the garden. Evergreen.

aka Tussock, NZ Sedge

This native 'grass' is really tough and hardy tolerating cold winds and almost any soil. The brick-orange foliage looks very graceful as it waves and dances in the wind. Ideal for planting in large drifts. If the clumps become a little untidy just chop back hard for renewed vigour. Evergreen.

Native. This quick growing coprosma creates a mat of rich green foliage. It is easily grown in a sunny position and make an excellent groundcover for banks. Tolerates most soil types, including coastal and exposed sites. Evergreen.

aka Karamu

Native. Commonly known as Karamu this evergreen native shrub has small dark green leaves with pale under-sides. Insignificant pale green flowers are followed by small orange berries that birds love. Easy to grow in sun or part shade with protection from harsh frost. Trim regularly to keep tidy.

Early Maori used Karamu as a food source and of course native birds love the berries. Believe it or not Coprosma are in the same family as the coffee plant but we wouldn't recommend substituting Karamu for your favourite brew!

aka Cabbage Tree

Native. A compact, broad leafed form which branches from an early age to form a neat, multi-stemmed plant. The foliage is a fresh clear green. As it does not grow taller than 2.5m it is ideal in a small courtyard or as a specimen in a large container. Sun or part shade. Evergreen.

Native. This form of the New Zealand cabbage tree has a lovely deep purple leaf with a hint of pink in the centre. Makes a dramatic statement in any planting scheme or simply stunning in a container. Tolerant of most conditions and easy to grow. Evergreen. PVR 1894.

Native. A tough, hardy shrub discovered by the late Mike Geenty in the Waikato. A top plant for hedging or background planting. Attractive olive-green leaves, small yellow flowers in spring followed by red berries that birds love. Tolerates regular trimming. Evergreen.

aka Kahikatea or White Pine

This NZ native can reach over 60m when fully mature but that takes quite some time, our height is for 10 year growth. Juvenile trees have fine drooping bronze 'needles' which eventually change to a green, more a flattened leaf. Produces berries which are loved by birds. Evergreen.

Native. A selected form of the ever popular Griselinia. Gorgeous, broad, glossy green foliage with attractive wavy margins. Ideal background shrub but at its best when used as a hedge. Tolerant of just about any planting conditions including coastal. Very tidy and well groomed. Evergreen.

Native. An attractive, evergreen native tree. The green oval leaves have a serrated edge and purple underside. This is highlighted as the leaves rustle in the breeze. Perfumed, star shaped white flowers in summer. Easy to grow as long as protected from harsh frost. Evergreen.

Native. An extremely attractive and graceful evergreen tree which is quick to establish and easy to grow. Fresh green and yellow variegated foliage all year round. In summer star shaped, honey scented white flowers appear en masse and almost smother the foliage with their display. Plant in sun or semi-shade. Evergreen

Native. An unusual form of our native Manuka (Tea Tree) which has a low semi-prostrate habit that makes it ideal for cascading over walls and banks. Can also be used in rock gardens or as a ground cover. The foliage is tiny, narrow and pointed, the flowers are white with dark centres. Evergreen.

A lovely little form of Tea Tree that has masses of flowers in spring through to autumn in tones of pink and dark pink. The small stiff leaves are in bronze green tones set on cascading branches making this a most attractive plant to tumble over banks and walls. Loves the sun. Hardy and evergreen.

Native. A very popular tree which is fast growing and frequently used for hedging, shelter and as a singular specimen tree The leaves, have a lemon scent when crushed. Cream yellow flowers. Hardy to just about everything including attacks by oppossums. Evergreen.

Native. You will want this naturally compact rounded Pittosporum because it looks great with it's limey green leaves. A great boarder plant that will look just as at home on your patio in a container or in the garden. Plant in full sun. Tough and hardy. Evergreen.

Pittorsporums love well drained fertile soil but are remarkably tolerant plants and will adapt to less than ideal conditions. They are hardy and generally healthy.

Native. A particularly nice form of Pittosporum with fresh green glossy foliage that always looks good. Perfect plant for screens and hedging as it responds well to clipping. Pittosporums bloom in spring with inconspicuous dark purple-brown flowers that will only come to your attention when you notice their strong fragrance on the evening air.

Ribbonwood. A native tree that is worth consideration for any planting scheme. When young the interlacing branches are covered in small dainty leaves. The leaves and whole tree become more graceful upon maturity. Quite easy to grow and remarkably wind tolerant. Deciduous.

Native. A very attractive form of our native Totara with blue-grey needles of foliage and attractive bark. Good as a specimen in the landscape or can be trimmed to form a dense hedge. Worthy of planting and very hardy and easy to grow. Evergreen

aka Golden Totara

Native. A handsome specimen tree for sun or part shade. The stiff narrow leaves are a beautiful golden shade and complement the reddish brown bark. Slow growing, hardy and tolerant of all conditions except wet 'feet'. Height given is 10 year estimate. Evergreen.

Totara were a valuable timer source in early NZ. Maori also used large specimens to craft their war canoes. The peeling bark was used for roofing material and for fashioning food baskets.
