Standard Floribunda . Discovered in 1995 this sport of 'Iceberg' has semi-double, honey scented blooms of bright cerise pink. There is just a hint of cream in the centre highlighted by pink stamens. Standard. Floribunda. This drop dead gorgeous, sumptuously coloured rose is a sport from the well loved 'Iceberg' rose. Burgundy Iceberg has well behaved glossy green foliage and few thorns. The blooms are a blend of rich burgundy purple and have a soft fragrance. Repeats well.

China Rose. An exceptionally graceful rose which bears masses of slender pointed buds of vivid red opening to soft yellow then changing to coppery tones of pink and later in the season crimson tones. A continuous, spectacular and unusual display. One of my firm favourites. Bred prior to 1896.

The name Mutablis means 'changeable' which is what really describes the flower colour best. This rose is also described as the 'Butterfly Rose' as the single flowers float and dance above the foliage like a - you guessed it - a butterfly.

Austin Standard. Has a unique character and a very special beauty. The young flower is deep pink, almost red, gradually fading to a pure deep pink as the bloom matures. The undersides of the petals have a pleasing hint of yellow. The petals are rather narrow and unusually substantial.

Rugosa. This strongly scented rose has beautiful semi-double, velvety wine-red flowers with a hint of purple. It is constantly in bloom over a long period. One of the best loved Rugosas with good reason. Nice dark green foliage which colours well in the autumn. Very hardy and tolerant. 1901.

The strongly scented flowers are followed by giant tomato-shaped hips. Hips are suitable for refreshing Rose Hip Tea.

Rugosa - Species. Glossy deep green foliage and enormous (10cm) flowers of pure white that are single and richly scented. A circle of golden stamens highlights the blooms which repeat on and off from spring to autumn. Lovely autumn foliage colour and red hips. Introduced to England in 1870.

As with all Rugosas this is a hardy and tolerant rose that copes well with poorer soils and even a little shade. Originally found in areas of Russia, China and Japan. Hips are used for Jam, Jelly and Tea.

Sam McGredy named this rose after his friend the late Rex Hotchin who was not at all like a pretty pink floribunda but a good friend worthy of naming a beautiful rose after.
