Synonymous with NZ forestry and 'Pine Tree Meads' this easy to grow and tolerant Conifer is actually from California. Quickly forms a handsome symmetrical Christmas tree when young, with fresh green needles of foliage. Quite ornamental, but usually grown for timber. Hardy, evergreen.

Pinus radiata will tolerate poor soil, heat, wind, frost and drought but it does prefer good drainage to do well.

Fern Pine. A graceful evergreen tree from Africa from the same family as our Totara. In its juvenile form it has green glossy fern like foliage arranged along slender willowy branches. Very slow growing so looks 'forever young' for many years. Sun or shade and deeply worked well drained soil for best results. Est.10 year growth.

The name Podocarpus refers to the stalked 'fruits' of this tree and gracilior means graceful.

This is a very special tree that hails from South Africa and is in the same family as our much loved Totara. The dark evergreen foliage is quite unique in appearance and has an attractive drooping, curving habit. Very tolerant and easy to grow but matures slowly. Very handsome specimen tree.

From the mountains of Japan and China comes this unusual, cold tolerant conifer. The leaves are long, thick and dark green and the growth is slow and upright. Popular in Japanese temple gardens. Responds well to trimming and is often used for hedges or bonsai. Tough, hardy and evergreen.

A slow growing dense shrub to small tree with an upright habit. Almost vertical,tight branching habit with deep green strap like foliage. Prefers sun to part shade and requires good drainage. Beautiful as a specimen tree or planted to make an impressive hedge.

aka Golden Totara

Native. A handsome specimen tree for sun or part shade. The stiff narrow leaves are a beautiful golden shade and complement the reddish brown bark. Slow growing, hardy and tolerant of all conditions except wet 'feet'. Height given is 10 year estimate. Evergreen.

Totara were a valuable timer source in early NZ. Maori also used large specimens to craft their war canoes. The peeling bark was used for roofing material and for fashioning food baskets.

aka Holly or Holm Oak

Believe it or not this is actually an Oak tree and its name refers to the fact that the evergreen leaves are like those of an Ilex (Holly). Juvenile leaves tend to be silvery grey and mature to dark green with a downy under side. Very easy to grow. Est.10yr.growth.

If left to mature Quercus ilex forms a very large specimen tree however it can easily be used for hedging if clipped regularly. It grows well in an exposed position, particularly on the coast and makes a good windbreak. Valued through the ages for medicinal purposes.

aka Pate, Seven Fingers

Pate. A NZ evergreen native forming a spreading tree with large deep green rather soft leaves with finely serrated margins. Large panicles of tiny greenish white flowers in summer, followed by white-purple berries. Requires a shady sheltered position, moist soils. Can also be grown as an indoor plant.

aka Peppercorn Tree

An excellent choice for large parks or play areas, in courtyards or along long broad driveways. The trunk will become gnarled and fabulously interesting with age.
