As we leave the 1920’s behind and the birth of suburban life begins the modern Floribunda Rose starts to make an appearance. Compact and free flowering, this style of rose was just what modern gardeners were looking for.  Initially these roses were known as Hybrid Polyanthas which we learnt last week means many flowered. The Americans, who were leaders in the development of this new style of rose, preferred the term Floribunda which they started to use in the 1930’s and this is the term still used by Rosarians today.

Florabunda. JulischkaIs a variety from 'Rosen Tantau' in Germany. This variety has a spreading nature. Clusters of fragrant, semi-double, scarlet flowers, pointed in the bud, from late spring into autumn and repeats well. Glossy, toothed, dark green leaves complete the picture. Deciduous.

Floribunda. A healthy rose with clusters of clear warm pink flowers borne in profusion throughout the season. Produced to commemorate the anniversary of the New Zealand suffragette movement. PVR.

Kate Sheppard was the leader and main figurehead of the suffragette movement in NZ - the first country in the world to grant women the vote.
