Divinely fragrant Syringa, (Lilac), are classic garden shrubs or small trees. They required well drained soil, are not overly fussy about their soil type (neutral to alkaline) and they’ll appreciate a sprinkling of Lime around the base of the tree occasionally. They are easy-care and easy-to-grow in cooler climates, or in warmer climates in an area shaded from the hot summer sun, they like a plenty of light and air movement around them. The fabulous panicles of fragrant, tubular, single or double flowers in shades of purple, pink and white appear in late spring stay to early summer. Lilac flowers are excellent for cutting and are edible, too. Syringa are upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous plants growing to around 2.5m tall and wide. Prune away any damaged, broken or unwanted branches to maintain a nice shape after flowering has finished for the season.
