aka Buddhist Pine or Yew Pine

From the mountains of Japan and China comes this unusual, cold tolerant conifer. The leaves are long, thick and dark green and the growth is slow and upright. Popular in Japanese temple gardens. Responds well to trimming and is often used for hedges or bonsai. Tough, hardy and evergreen.

aka Golden Totara

Native. A handsome specimen tree for sun or part shade. The stiff narrow leaves are a beautiful golden shade and complement the reddish brown bark. Slow growing, hardy and tolerant of all conditions except wet 'feet'. Height given is 10 year estimate. Evergreen.

Totara were a valuable timer source in early NZ. Maori also used large specimens to craft their war canoes. The peeling bark was used for roofing material and for fashioning food baskets.

aka Japanese Umbrella Pine

Slow growing when young. Treat as a dwarf for the first 10 years. It then grows faster and can eventually be as tall as 20 m. Great for all gardens as when it gets older it is quite narrow for its height. It makes a fine tub plant as it is able to withstand long periods of dry conditions.

This unique conifer, native to Japan, is a living fossil, and the last survivor of the family Sciadopityaceae.

aka English Yew

Conifer This enduring tree features fine, dark green, glossy leaves and has a slow growth rate. Its ability to be clipped and shaped easily makes it an excellent choice for formal plantings, topiary designs and hedging. Evergreen.

All parts of this plant are poisonous including the red berries.

Large, bushy, upright evergreen shrub, columnar when young. As the plant ages it becomes broader, with erect shoots bearing radially arranged, dark green leaves.

The Latin 'fastigiata' literally means erect branches growing close together; columnar;upright.

An upright Japanese Plum Yew that is a strong, vertical, slow grower not unlike the Irish Yew. New growth is bright green and very attractive and evergreen. Likes full sun and does well in the shade as well. Ideal uses would be a formal garden or a shade loving backdrop or as a specimen in a pot.
