Sneaky Downy Mildew

Hi

For The Chocoholics
Its been all about choccy cake here this week as yet another year ticks over for Harry.  Tony made a couple of different ones that we haven't made for ages and were they ever good. Chocolate cakes are a bit of a specialty with Tony and the two cakes are quite different. One is more traditional with cherries added in and the other recipe is a very moist rich cake, which was passed on to Tony from his sister Yvonne.
Harry took the one with black cherries in it with him when he went off to visit his mother and shared it all around there and the other made it to the staffroom.
Ang made another chocolate cake and brought it in for H and the rest of the team and it was pretty damn fine too. A one egg chocolate cake straight out of the Edmonds cookbook.  I have had a case of the guilts lately as there haven't been any recipes and I have got one that I going to try  being an orange and almond cake. Its just that we have these gorgeous oranges ready at the moment and I was thinking what can I make using these. There is also a lemon and passion fruit slice that I have a urge to try as well as lemons are plentiful at the moment and I have all that passion fruit pulp that I preserved last year.

Wet spring weather is perfect for Downy

Roses
I just have to write a piece about the sneaky rose fungus that is called "Downy mildew". Now Downy mildew is so sneaky that the leaves will just fall off your roses without any other physical signs and this weather over the last month has just been perfect for it. New roses can be more susceptible, though olderestablished rose plants can get it too. If you do see it on the leaves it can look like a faint purplish marking.  It's all these showers of rain and cool evening temps that cause the problem.
Once the leaves fall off and another shower of rain comes along, its the rain drops hitting the ground and the fallen leaves that cause the reinfection of the new leaves. The new leaves are so soft and tender at this time of year they are easily infected and Downy can even damage the rose stems.  If you think that you have Downy mildew, you need to spray with Bravo and do two or three sprays 2 days apart to halt its progress. Spray the ground underneath as well and remove all the fallen leaves and put them out with the rubbish. Then spray the day before it rains and the day after from now on. Its what I do at the nursery and I have already sprayed the roses here as its due to rain over the weekend and when the rain stops, I will be there spraying again. An important thing to note is that, in your garden the roses will be so much less likely to get downy mildew especially if they have good air movement around them and they have been fed. Another point to note is that different roses vary in susceptibility to Downey mildew.

New in this week, well there is heaps, spring is here after all
Magnolias

Clematis Hybrids. The Queens of all Clematis renown for those huge gorgeous flowers in wicked blues pinks and cream. Now these are all just pushing through into leaf and bud and are not quite out yet but they will be coming out very soon.

Clematis paniculata, our very own native clematis are doing their thing right now with masses of showy white flowers. This one is evergreen and will climb right to the top to get the light. I planted one years ago in an old Lawson tree and its right up there flowering its head off every spring.

Fluff and stuff or what I call the pretties have all started to come in this week. Lavenders  of the rabbit eared variety These include the new Leigh series, of which we have Lemon Leigh, Pat Leigh and Myr Leigh. Also have in stock some nice plants of lavender Major.
Perennials  just in  Catmint, Yellow Wallflower,  Gazania Rose Kisses,  Aquilegia Songbird mix
Grasses of the brown and green varieties
Griselinias whenuapai  a new batch of these in, nice fresh plants at $12.99 and ideal for hedging

Flowering Cherries
More of these gorgeous spring blossom and just to tempt you there is Okame with pretty single pink blossoms and the famous Awanui  with clouds of soft pink blossoms. Both 39.99 and now just $24.99.  Fiinally Kanzan with its brighter pink and double blossoms. Normally $49.99 but here just $29.99.
Cherries
Pear double grafted  Doyenne Du Comice and Beurre Bosc
Most pears need a mate and the easiest way to overcome having two trees is to have a double grafted one. Got a deal on these, Normally $49.99 just 29.99 each

A bit late this week, just like the rain that didn't start here until well after 4pm. I always say that we have amazing growth here in the Waikato as we have a constant rainfall hence amazing gardens. dont forget to spray your roses after the rain stops. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
Take Care
Cheers, Lloyd and Harry and the team
