Best Pup In Show

Hi

Galaxy and Pups Trinity, Star and Molly

Gosh its been an awesome warm spring until this morning when we all awoke to see the ground all crispy and white and the forecast temperature of -2 was achieved, but what an absolute gorgeous day to be had. The frost didn't really last that long at all and well it wouldn't be spring without a late frost or two.

We were in the  garden centre yakking as you do with a regular client  and they asked after Galaxy the Italian greyhound who just recently had 3 beautiful puppies. Well of course one stayed at home with us and she is a really pretty tan colour and got the name Trinity. The other two are the same colour as their mother and all with as much personality.  Molly went to a home up in Auckland and came to stay with us for a few weeks just recently whilst her parents were away.  What a fun week we had with the three greyhounds zinging around the house. The other pup was named Star by us and went to a local lady whose hobby is to breed and show these very elegant dogs.  Well Ann called out last week and was as proud as punch as she won four ribbons being best baby puppy and best baby pup in show. Congratualtions to Ann with her winning baby pup.

Orange and Almond Cake  from Ripe Recipes cook book
I promised last week that I was going  to make this Orange and almond cake using some Cipo oranges I have, out of this beautiful cookbook  called" Ripe Recipes" that was given to Anthony.  We had some friends coming for dinner so it was another good excuse to make it as we were going to have it for dessert. On top of all that it was damn easy to make. Now it's also got no wheat or dairy product in it and I just love almonds.  I have to say that it was delicious and looked damn good on a plate served with extra sauce and whipped cream.

Downy Mildew Update the chemical free way
For those that want a friendly alternative to Bravo, Wally Richards recommends Perkfection Supa as a product that stimulates  the plants natural resistance against Downy mildew and the like, that roses can get. I am also of the opinion that a well fed and maintained plant will also be more resistant to infections anyways so with this tonic its got to be all good. Take ourselves, if we eat healthy options, get plenty of quality sleep and regular exercise and if you can manage it LOL moderation of alcohol intake then we are also less likely to get sick and plants are really no different. We stock Bioboost which is a slow release organic fertiliser that the team here all swear by, Steve uses it on our lawns,  Chris who writes, demands the stuff and we have clients in here extolling the virtues of Bioboost and how good their gardens are.  If you are hankering to know more, then  Wallys Down to Earth Gardening Guide  is a good choice, as an informative and user friendly Guide to have at home. If you want your own copy then get in touch or order online.
FOR THE PLANT NUT
Podophyllum Kaleidoscope
This plant is way unusual and has the coolest, like out of space leaves  with silver markings, Now this plant likes to grow in a dappled light position that has good drainage. The other important point to note is that it's a true perennial and will die back in the winter so don't forget where it is so you don't break its new leaves as they come through each spring.
Hybrid Clematis. These are a little trickier to grow than most but are they just so worth the effort,  They like a cooler root run, so I put a rock or a couple of bricks over their roots. This also doubles as protection from being disturbed when gardening around them. Now these can be susceptible to wilt infections but I have successfully treated them with rootmate or Trichopel which, for the want of a better name, are a friendly fungus to treat the soil with.

French Taragon We don't have that many herbs on board just yet, but they are coming, though we do have Taragon and it's the real stuff , French tarragon with the proper flavour and not like the imposter Russian tarragon. Now you can tell that you have the proper stuff when you chew a bit of the leaf and it ever so nicely numbs your tongue, well just a tinsie bit anyways. Its of this stuff that H makes his famed Tarragon oils that nearly burnt our house down but that's an old story now. Make your own oil and pan fry fish in it and you wont go back.
Flowering Cherries
I have been watching our avenue of Awanui cherries building up to be being in full flower and I have to say they are about to look particularly stunning. It always amazes me how a single flower can look just so spectacular but its because there are just so many flowers that make the whole impression. so the moral of the story is not to overlook the bloom because its a single but rather of how the deal looks. My guess is that the flowering cherries will all be amazing this year as we had quite a cool winter for the Waikato and these beauties respond well to a winter chill. I often get asked what is L/W and H/W and this is where the  grower grafts them so L/W is low worked and really just means that you can make the height of the cherry trunk to whatever suits you by limbing up the lower branches. H/W means that they are high worked at various height and this is the height of the trunk ie 1.75m. Initially they do look my instant or tree like but at the end of the day there is no real difference. Flowering cherries in the scheme of trees are not overly huge and will acheive a spready shade like tree of approx. 4 to 5 metres high and wide. Pretty good to shade that patio area and yet loses their leaves to let the sun in during the winter.
If you want to create your own avenue or even a cluster of flowering cherries, we have to tempt you. Okame with pretty single pink blossoms and the famous Awanui  with clouds of soft pink blossoms. Both 39.99 and now just $24.99.  Finally Kanzan with its brighter pink and double blossoms. Normally $49.99 but here just $29.99.
Cherries
Pear double grafted  Doyenne Du Comice and Beurre Bosc
Most pears need a mate and the easiest way to overcome having two trees is to have a double grafted one. Got a deal on these, Normally $49.99 just 29.99 each
Winter Roses I did a bit of negotiating with one  of our suppliers for some of these as they have finished flowering but the plants are big and full so if you want to mass plant out a woodland or shaded area then these are just the buy. We would normally stock these at $18.99 but have them out there at a cool $12.99.

Have a great weekend and take care.
Cheers, Lloyd and Harry and the team
