Plan some more fine weather tasks
Well getting our gear off and dancing around in the light of the full moon the other night hasn't worked as there is no rain imminent. Did we really!! Well I have to own up to no, but I would if I knew that it was going to work. I think that we get so used to regular rain here in the Waikato that when it's dry for an extended time, that it feels really unusual. It also never ceases to amaze me but how plants can hang in there when it is so dry and interestingly enough some water is enough to get them through. Watch out for any new plantings that you may have done. Water long and deep if you can and don't hook into short bursts that often doesn't get down to the roots. Established plants should on the whole be able to hold their own but the vege garden, annuals and those that have shallow rooting system will be feeling the pinch.Nothing more certain but the rains will come, it's just a case that I hope that it is sooner rather than later but in the meantime we still have plenty of tables to spruce up with a lick of paint. A couple of pergolas that will look cool with a freshen up and then there are the new fences that will tie the whole look together. As that cliché saying goes ‘Make hay while the sun shines'

THE ALBA'S - Pale and Pasty Or White cliffs of Dover
The Albas, I have always been really fond of that classic old fashioned rose look, a bit like tissue paper that's drawn and quartered and all held to gather with a button. These are shrub like and would be an awesome summer flowering plant (most shrubs flower in spring). Now Chris who has done the homework writes:Originally thought to be a species, Alba roses are now known (through modern DNA tests) to be an ancient natural hybrid of Rosa canina and Rosa damascene. Rosa canina commonly known as the ‘Dog Rose' earned its name from the thorns that were said to represent the teeth of the dog i.e. Canines and Rosa damascena refers to the origins of this Rose i.e. Damascus in the Middle East. The Romans who did indeed roam (for roam read conquer) are purported to have introduced Alba Roses to Britain. Rosa x alba quickly adapted to its new habitat and grew wild throughout ancient Britain. The name Alba literally translated means white and some historians say this may be why Britain was known as The Isle of Albion in ancient times but I think it is more likely to refer to the White Cliffs of Dover or perhaps it was because the ancient Brits were a pale and pasty lot! No package deals to Majorca in those days.
Alba roses all have the following characteristics:-
- White or pastel summer flowers that are delightfully fragrant
- Large grey-green foliage on slender stems
- Upright tall growth habit
- Very hardy with good disease resistance
- Low maintenance with only a light prune required after flowering
ROSES All half price!! Its time clear out all of this seasons roses, They are really good plants, well fed and sprayed and I need to start getting ready for the next rose season, so out they all go at half price. If ordering online then please have some subs, if we dont have your first choice as they are getting low. If the catalogue says order for Winter 2013 then we are out of those cultivars. If you come out to the Nursery then we have even reduced our seconds from $12.50 to $6.00 just to clear them out but you will have to come on out and ferret through them.
If there is something in particular that you are after then now is the time to organise it, pre order your roses for June which is not that far away now. Check out our newer listings, some of these are brand new this year, others are old cultivars that we will have again and some were new last year and it may be worth pre-ordering New roses to us.
There are stilll some of these left at half price so if you are interested then get on out or order online. Otherwise if you are looking for something specific then order for new seasons plants which will be in soon
There is more painting to be done, so that will be our weekend sorted getting ready for some more projects. I know that its dry but make the most of the summer because it will be cold and wet soon enough. Have fun and catch you next week.
Take care
Cheers, Lloyd and Harry and the team
