Sunday 13th March, 2011
What a beautiful week its been but haven't the evenings cooled off big time, there has even been morning mist which surely heralds that its now officially Autumn. I have to say that it's perfect so far especially with that rain that we had last weekend. Autumn is natures planting time because the ground is warm and moist and the plants make that all important root growth before winter.
Pears Pears Pears
Its been pear time in our house, Dad has been running over with bowls of stewed pears because he doesn't know what to do with them all. Then our friend from out Huntly way has been poaching them for dessert, we discovered, when we went out there for dinner the other night.
Now the beaut thing about growing your own pears is that they are easy to grow and you can get pears without too many issues and in my book that is a huge plus.
They fruit on fruiting spurs which means that you can train the tree as you want. It can go along a fence line or become a smallish specimen tree. The only other point that I should make is that they do benefit from having a friend beside them. (don't we all! LOL)
Now we all probably know the good ole classics but on one of the plants that we had here, Belle de Jumet, there were a couple of fruit. Boy were they ever good and this tree can be happy on its own though I bet crops better if there is a companion near by.
Dont forget if we dont have the pear you want in stock currently then new seasons will be available in Winter and we can take an order for then. There is still $10.00 off apple pears and plums that are in stock now

Pear Puds
The good thing about having a retired dad living on the property is that I can con him into baking. It does cost me the odd dinner or three so I didn't feel guilty as I handed dad my copy of the The River Café Cook Book by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers and got him to bake these two pear desserts.
This first one is really simple and a great classy pudding without a helluva lot of effort. Harry sisters, Rose and Teresa tucked in and gave it a thumbs up. If you love Almonds like me and Teresa then you'll adore the second pud.
Pears baked with Marsala and Cinnamon
6 ripe pears
50grams butter soft
100grams soft brown sugar
175 mls Marsala
50 mls white wine
2 cinnamon stick roughly broken
Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius
Slice end so that pear will stand and remove core
Spread a little butter over the skin of each pear and stand up in an oven proof dish
Dust with sugar
Pour marsala and white wine into dish
Scatter cinnamon sticks over the pears and cover the dish loosely with foil.
Bake for about 30 minutes
Remove the foil and lowers the oven heat to 150 degreees
Continue to bake for a further 30 minutes until the pears are very tender and lightly shrivelled
Serve warm with juices and crème fraiche
Pear and Almond tart
This dessert we cheated and used bought short pastry and halved the recipe to make it fit our container. Its really delicious and well worth making.
Pkt Sweet short pastry
Roll out or push the short pastry into a 22 x 30 x 5cm deep dish and bake blind at 180 degrees C
Cool the pastry and place in the pears face down on the pastry
Reduce your oven to 150 degrees C
175 grams unsalted butter'
175 grams castor sugar
175 grams ground almonds
2 small eggs
6 pears peeled and quartered, use soft ripe pears
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy and light, add the almonds to the creamed butter and sugar then beat in eggs one by one
Pour over the pears and bake for 40mins
Well Its sunday and the weekend is almost done, hope it was a good one and have a great week
catch ya next week!!
Cheers Lloyd and Harry
