Pieris aka Lily of the Valley Shubs

Hi

Its Official !   Its Spring !!!!
September, the first official month of spring, and its really going off at the minute. The days are heaps longer and its certainly not cold. All the bird life are out there scrounging stuff to make new nests, Anthony's canaries included. ( well he's out there providing a generous mix of straw wool and other goodies to make sure that's it's a good breeding season LOL)
It certainly is a beautiful time watching as all the trees and plants come to life. I have to say being the foliage person that I am, that there is nothing more beautiful than the colour of new leaves. Some one asked me what my favourite tree was and a persimmon has to rate quite high. You just look at the colour of those new lime green leaves (Its Special) and they colour delightfully red in the autumn and then they drop leaving this naked tree with bright orange tomato shaped fruit hanging!

Now while Im banging on about leaves the new foliage of Pieris or Lily of the Valley shrubs emerge the most vivid red colour and then as this foliage it ages to green again
I don't know if I have mentioned it before but plants are grouped into families based on their flower bits. Now Pieris belongs to the family Ericaceae and I hadn't really made that connection before but when you look at the flower shape well, they are quite Erica shaped. No prizes though for guessing where the common name comes from though but you must add the word shrub so we all know what we are talking about. I have to add that if you can use the botanic name then we all know whats what!!!
Pieris or lily of the valley,  Like the same sort of possies that Camellias and Daphnes do, dappled light, good rich soil that is moist but not wet. Same sort of beauitfil flowers like the real lily of the valley or chains of white or pink bells. They make really handsome shrubs and some/most forms even have amazing red/bronzed coloured new growth
NEW IN THIS WEEK
Gorgeous Delphiniums Time to get these majestic beauties in, but watch out for those ferocious slugs as they just adore the tasty new leaves. If you have existing Delphs in the garden, then make sure that you put slug bait out!
Delphinium Black eyed Angels       Delphinium Misty Mauves     Delphinium Pink Punch      Delphinium Purple Passion

Delphiniums These are the elatum hybrids and are considered superior to the pacific hybrids. They are the tall English, majestic hybrids and will reach from 100 to 180cm high. These hybrids are available in an excellent range of colours and are the result of a breeding programme by Terry Dowdeswell for the last 25 yeaars
Delphiniums would have to be among one of my favourite perennials, They are reasonable easy to grow but just keep the slugs of their new foliage.
