Hullo to the Cercis!

Hi

Our naughty Chooks

Yehaa ! Its Spring time and the days are getting longer!  And the chooks are on the lay again. But some of them are being naughty and are eating their own eggs that are destined for our breakfast. Harry had heard that if you put some eggs back in with a mixture of chilli powder to break the habit. He seems to be losing the battle as they appear to like his concoctions though it must have put some off as we are getting more eggs than we were. Any one that has got any hot ideas that will help Harry stop his chooks eating their own eggs, I'm sure he'd be keen to hear them.

Plant Watch

I was down amongst the deciduous trees the other day and found the Chinese redbuds (Cercis chinensis Avondale) were in full flower and are they ever stunning.  They have masses of small pink pea like flowers that are attached to the stems. There are a few different Cercis and Judas Tree is the common name for the species siliquastrum and I'm sure that you all know the Forest pansy or more correctly Cercis Canadensis Forest pansy ! Now this family make for quite handsome smaller growing trees suitable for those not so big sections. All Cercis have, kinda cool shaped, rounded leaves that could almost be described as kidney shaped and Forest pansy's claim to fame is the beautiful red wine colour that they are. Pea shaped flowers attached to the stems is their signature mark and they tend to be in shades of cerise pink another form being Oklahoma, though there are a few white forms around ie Texas White.

REDBUD 'AVONDALE'
Avondale Redbud is the showiest of all the Redbuds, this selection originated from Duncan & Davies (one of the oldest nurseries in NZ) and produces fantastic deep ceris pink flowers along its branches and even on the main trunk. Grown as a single stem or multi-stemmed tree, it flowers at an early age. In early spring blooming can easily stop traffic, it is so stunning.

Slugs and Snails

Watch out for these slippery fellas at this time of year. They will be out in force to snack on all the new foliage coming through the ground. Hostas are a favourite and if they take a bite before the leaves unfurl then every leaf will have holes. Put out slug bait regularly from now on to get those leaves up and out unscathed
