A very useful little native for use as a ground cover or to drape over the edge of a container. Creeping soft stems of small maroon coloured foliage quickly forms a dense colourful mat. Happiest growing in a sunny well drained position. Will even do well in gravel. Evergreen.

aka Hair Sedge

Native. A lovely soft bronze- red grass with fine tufts of arching foliage. Grows in a wide range of conditions including coastal. Comans means "like a luxuriant head of hair" hence the common name of 'Hair Sedge'. Looks its best in large drifts. Evergreen.

aka Autumn Sedge

Wetland Native - Autumn Sedge. Attractive tufts of coarse green foliage with strong bronze tones. Summer seed-heads of dark brown. Will grow happily in moist damp conditions in sun or part shade. Tough and robust, great for mass planting in difficult spots. Evergreen.

aka Tussock, NZ Sedge

This native 'grass' is really tough and hardy tolerating cold winds and almost any soil. The brick-orange foliage looks very graceful as it waves and dances in the wind. Ideal for planting in large drifts. If the clumps become a little untidy just chop back hard for renewed vigour. Evergreen.

aka Prostrate marble leaf

Carpodetus serratus prostrate is a semi-prostrate form of Putaputaweta which can grow to a height of 75 cm and have a spread of a 1 m. It prefers damp and shade. In spring and summer it can be covered in small white flowers. Prefers damp soils, sun or shade.

Native. This low growing vigorous Coprosma creates a mat of rich rounded glossy sage green leaves with cream edges and gold coloured stems. It is easily grown in a sunny position and makes an excellent groundcover for banks. Grows in almost any sunny site. Frost, seashore and coastal tolerant. Evergreen.

aka Sand Dune Coprosma

Native. A unique little shrub or ground-cover with a tangled mass of curving, twisting, springy, inter-twining branches that are an unusual bronze orange tone. Tolerant of hot dry positions including coastal but not happy in cold frosty spots. Evergreen.

aka Mirror Plant

Native. Named for where it grows naturally - the Poor Knights Islands - this Coprosma is valued for the beautiful glossy green and evergreen foliage. Its growth habit is low and wide so it makes a good filler for banks etc. Likes the sun and can tolerate dry coastal conditions but not frost.

The gorgeous warm bronze leaf tones of this native Corokia make it highly desirable for contrast planting. 'Bronze King' has a tight, compact habit making it perfect for hedging. Trims well. Tough, hardy and easy to grow in just about any conditions including coastal. Evergreen.

Native. Chocolate without the calories! The soft melted chocolate colour of the leaves combines well with other foliage and looks fantastic as a formal hedge with a difference. Easy to grow and clips extremely well. Yellow flowers in spring followed by berries that birds love. Evergreen.

Native. This form of Korokio or Corokia was discovered at the Mangatangi dam in the Hinua ranges hence the name. The foliage is silver green and has quite a 'misty' look. Yellow flowers in spring followed by berries. A great shrub for group planting or hedging, tough, hardy and evergreen.

Native. This shade loving herbaceous ground cover loves the damp. Found along streams,waterfalls and gullies, plant where consistent moisture is available. Filtered light will bring out the bronze tones but full shade is enjoyed by this lovely perennial. Looks great co planted with ferns. Evergreen.

Native. A selected form of the ever popular Griselinia. Gorgeous, broad, glossy green foliage with attractive wavy margins. Ideal background shrub but at its best when used as a hedge. Tolerant of just about any planting conditions including coastal. Very tidy and well groomed. Evergreen.

Native. An easy to grow shrub which is invaluable for difficult sites as it is tolerant of almost any conditions including coastal. Fresh bright green foliage highlighted by red stems. Particularly useful for hedging. Always looks neat and tidy, trims exceptionally well. Evergreen.

This hebe was developed by a Waikato Nursery as part of the Regal Series of Hebes and named for the Duchess of Cambridge. New leaf shoots are burgundy red in colour, maturing to deep olive green. Masses of purple flowers develop through summer. Trim back after flowering to keep tidy. PVR eligible.

Evergreen Hebe which is considered one of the best. Hardy, compact with dainty fresh green foliage and short spikes of white flowers which completely smother the plant from late spring through until summer. Happiest in a sunny well drained position. Very disease resistant. Evergreen

The 'Wiri' series of Hebe have been bred, selected and named by Jack Hobbs of Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens.

Native. Manuka AKA Tea Tree. From the Far North of NZ this evergreen shrub has large soft pink flowers with wavy petals borne in profusion during winter and spring. Quite an open growth habit with light green foliage. Happiest in the sun and copes well with wind.

Native. An unusual form of our native Manuka (Tea Tree) which has a low semi-prostrate habit that makes it ideal for cascading over walls and banks. Can also be used in rock gardens or as a ground cover. The foliage is tiny, narrow and pointed, the flowers are in tones of rose red and pink. Evergreen.

What a delightful little plant this native Iris is. Striking golden variegated foliage that forms a strong clump. Dainty little white butterfly flowers appear in summer followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow in a sunny position in average soil. Evergreen. PVR.

Native. The NZ Iris is an attractive clump forming perennial with spears of fresh green foliage. In summer white 'butterfly' flowers dance above the leaves on stiff, wiry stems. These are followed by ornamental seed pods. Well worth planting and easy to grow. Evergreen.

This little Iris has to be one of my favourite NZ natives as it has such dainty white "butterfly" flowers. The narrow sword like leaves form a strong clump, the flowers appear in summer followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow in average soil in a sunny position. Evergreen.

Kawaka, New Zealand cedar. Slow growing N.Z native. Handsome, symmetrical, pyramidal tree with bright-green, scale-like leaves. Superb as a neat-growing screen, for breaking up dark greenery, or for lining driveways. Evergreen tree that grows at a moderate rate to reach 3m in 10 years.

A beautiful low growing shrub that has lime green foliage that grows in a compact habit. In summer it can be smothered in small red flowers. Can be used for hedging, low borders or in a pot. Great for coastal planting to withstand exposure. Evergreen

Protected from comercial propagation by Plant Variety Rights. Found during a comfort stop in the Waioeke Gorge as a variation on the green rata. Small rich cream and green leaves and very compact habit. White flowers but not a feature. Does excellently in pots. Frost tender. Can be trained to be a climber

Will climb up a wall, ponga or bank if placed against it but otherwise acts as a shrub.

aka Wire Plant

A spreading, deciduous shrub that can add interest to any garden and works well contrasted with bold foliage. Brown zig-zag stems with small heart shaped green leaves. A unique habit of growth and foliage makes for a great feature shrub or mass planted. Extremely hardy.

Can be used as a low informal hedge or clipped to shape for a more formal hedge and sculptural topiary.

aka Creeping Wire Vine

Here's something just a bit different to add contrast and texture to your planting schemes. Golden stems covered with tiny dark green leaves twist and turn to form a mat of dark green. Dainty yellow flowers in summer sometimes followed by black berries.

aka Wire Vine

The twisting, tangled stems of this native Climber make for an interesting and useful plant that can be trained as a climber or used to scramble informally wherever you want quick cover and a plant of interest. Plant in morning sun in soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Semi-evergreen.

The flowers on the female form of Muehlenbeckia are inconspicuous but emit a pleasant fragrance. The flowers are followed by little white berries. This plant also responds well to clipping and is often used for informal topiary work.

Native. A compact Flax with attractively arching foliage. The broad leaves have a band of cream, edged with green which is in turn margined with red. Easy to grow in just about any position you desire however will look its best with protection from harsh afternoon sun. Groom to keep tidy. Evergreen

A compact growing flax with green, bronze and pink striped arching leaves. Looks stunning group planted or make a simple statement by planting in a colour co-ordinated container. Tolerates heat, salt and drought. Plant in full sun to increase colour vibrancy. Easy to grow. Evergreen.

Striking fingers of red tinged with bronze and pink highlights. Phormium Red Fingers is a smaller growing flax which is ideal for adding structural interest and form to your garden. Can be grown in a pot or container.

Native. You will want this naturally compact rounded Pittosporum because it looks great with it's limey green leaves. A great boarder plant that will look just as at home on your patio in a container or in the garden. Plant in full sun. Tough and hardy. Evergreen.

Pittorsporums love well drained fertile soil but are remarkably tolerant plants and will adapt to less than ideal conditions. They are hardy and generally healthy.

A compact dwarf form of the ever popular Pittosporum. 'Little Burger' has fresh green foliage all year round and grows in a natural rounded ball shape. Responds well to trimming. Grow in the sun in well drained soil. Hardy and evergreen.

Native. A particularly nice form of Pittosporum with fresh green glossy foliage that always looks good. Perfect plant for screens and hedging as it responds well to clipping. Happiest in sun or part shade and likes well drained fertile soil, is tolerant of less than ideal conditions. Hardy and evergreen.

Pittosporums bloom in spring with inconspicuous dark purple-brown flowers that will only come to your attention when you notice their strong fragrance on the evening air.

NZ Native. This shrub is very well named - the tiny rounded leaves are a pale silvery green and certainly do seem to shimmer in the light. Forms a very nice background plant or can be used for hedging and topiary as it loves a regular hair-cut. Easy to grow in a sunny well drained spot. Evergreen.

Native. A lovely little shrub with aromatic foliage that is burgundy red and green in spring-summer and tones of red and deep purple through winter. Easy to grow in sun or part shade, hardy. Evergreen.

Commonly called Horopito or Pepperwood. Easy to grow and has striking red blushed, aromatic foliage. Little green fragrant, star flowers appear in spring but these do not compete with the foliage. Plant in sun or semi-shade in nice deep soil for best results. Hardy and evergreen.

Can grow to 1.5m or more after 10 years, depending on growing environment.

Native. A distinctive form of the popular Kowhai with tangled, twisted, branches with small olive green leaves. Forms a little mounding hummock. The yellow flowers appear in spring but can be hidden amongst the branches. An interesting rather than beautiful form but I rather like it. Evergreen.
