Tea. An outstanding Rose with open flat flowers that have a multitude of petals. The blooms are a pleasing blend of pink, copper and soft orange. The foliage is dark and glossy and the stems have few thorns. A delightful fragrance and generosity of bloom complete the picture. France 1872.

This rose is sometimes confused with Monsieur Tillier and vice versa as they are very similar in appearance however they are definitely different. Archiduc Joseph was named after a great plant collector - Archduke Joseph of Austro-Hungary.

A lovely little rose with button-hole blooms of pretty pink that appear in large sprays throughout summer. The blooms are lightly scented. Fine green foliage and stems with few thorns. Often confused with 'Cecile Brunner' but distinguished by the long sepals at the base of each bloom. 1920.

Native Hair Sedge.. The name Comans means "luxuriant head of hair" and this native Tussock Grass certainly has a fine head of green needle foliage. Tolerant of just about any conditions including coastal. Quickly forms a clump and is invaluable for adding texture to the garden. Evergreen.

An attractive spreading evergreen shrub which features sparkling clusters of dark blue flowers in late spring. The shiny foliage turns a deeps ebony shade during winter, changing to dark chocolate-green during spring and summer. Quite hardy and tolerant of wind and cold. PVR 1334.

This is a very useful shrub for cascading over walls and banks. Benefits from a trim every now and then (after flowering) to encourage healthy new growth. Very striking in full flower.

China. A perfect little buttonhole rose, simply charming. Almost always in flower with small perfect pink blooms that open from long pointed buds. The fragrance is sweet and spicy. Relatively few thorns and healthy foliage. Quite vigorous. 1881. AKA The Sweetheart Rose, Maltese Rose and Mignon.

Alba. We don't know the origin or age of this rose but we do know that is really lovely when it flowers in summer. The blooms are set on reddish stems against grey-green foliage. They are sweetly scented. softest pink, open and cupped. Red hips follow the blooms. Tolerant and hardy.

Climber Noisette. A summer flowering small climber with spicy scented flowers of primrose yellow. The quartered frilly blooms have a green button eye. We have this in our garden and it performs well. Repeats intermittently until autumn. 1842.

'Snow in Summer' AKA Yoyo is so named as the tiny silver grey leaves are smothered in star-shaped white flowers throughout the summer. A sweet little perennial which is perfect to cascade over walls and hot dry banks. Quite vigorous and hardy. Evergreen.

Austin Rose. Another excellent rose from David Austin of England. The large double blooms are a shade of yellow that I would describe as old gold. Very fragrant so plant where you will enjoy the perfume. Broad spreading vigorous growth and good disease resistance. Plenty of blooms.

Austin. Shrub/Climber. Described by David Austin as "their finest white rose to date" and appropriately named after his daughter Claire. Buds of pale lemon open to large white blooms with petals arranged in concentric circles. The plentiful blooms are very fragrant. Excellent disease resistance. 2011.

Claire Austin is also an established nursery woman growing perennials. Her book "Irises- A Gardeners Encyclopedia" is a "must have" for any Iris grower.

aka New Zealand Clematis

Clematis. One of the loveliest NZ Native plants, suitable for trellises, walls or rambling joyfully through trees. Festoons of large, starry, pure white blooms with golden anthers appear in spring, followed by silken seed heads. Keep roots cool with a nice layer of mulch. Evergreen.

Moss. An exquisite rose with tight buds clad with dark green 'moss' that open to reveal small flowers in sumptuous maroon-black highlighted with golden stamens. The blooms carry a sweet fragrance and appear in summer. Small dainty leaves and few prickles. France 1845.

Pronounced 'Nwee duh yoong' this rose is named for poet Edward Young whose poem 'Night Thoughts' was very popular in the 19th century.

This beautiful evergreen climber comes to us from Australia. The foliage is a deep glossy green and the trumpet blooms are shaded a soft pink with a deep maroon centre. Austin Climbing Rambler Rose A repeat flowering variety which, has fully double flowers, which are small and cup-shaped. They are blush pink, fading to blush white and are held in large, gracefully hanging sprays. The petals of each bloom are arranged around a little button eye; the overall appearance being one of exceptional prettiness and charm.

This rose is named for the village where David Austin nursery is located.

Austin Rose. An impressive variety, bearing masses of large, many petalled blooms on a bushy, quite upright shrub. The blooms are a lovely glowing mid pink at the centre, paling towards the edges. Over time, they each reveal a cluster of golden stamens. There is a medium-strong myrrh fragrance.

Austin Rose. A vigorous and hardy rose with glossy green disease resistant foliage. The soft pink blooms have a delicate beauty and are beautifully formed, full and double. Repeats well throughout the season, will need support. Nice fragrance too. You'll want this one. 2009.

Named for Wedgwood to commemorate their 250th anniversary. Josiah Wedgwood, the 'Father of English Potters', founded the company in 1759.

Austin Rose. The beautifully rounded flowers and neatly placed petals make up a perfect rosette. The buds show light yellow, the flowers open to pure white, with a light apple fragrance. It has excellent vigour and health. It has typical light green Musk Rose foliage and is almost thornless.

Climber. Large, well formed, peach blooms on nice long stems, great for cutting. It's gorgeous tropical fragrance is the proverbial flag on top of the cocktail. Nice compact habit for a climber making it great for smaller spaces. Foliage is dark, glossy and with overall good health.

Gallica. An upright rose that is a natural 'sport' from rose 'Tuscany'. The strong stems have few thorns and the dark crimson flowers are very strongly scented. The flowers are semi-double and have a nice prominent display of golden stamens. An easy to grow rose that flowers in early summer 1848.

aka Poor Knights Lily

Poor Knights Lily is a stunning plant and well worth growing. A very slow growing plant with fans of flax-like leaves up to 1m high. Its striking red flowers occur on tall stems in Spring but it takes up to 7 years to flower. When root-bound it will flower more quickly and prolifically.

On the islands, the plants are fed with seabird droppings, which are high in nitrogen and phosphorous. You can simulate this with bird guano, which is sold at some garden shops, or online. Or you may use any slow-release fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorous.
