An early, free flowering and compact Clematis with large mauve-blue flowers with creamy-yellow anthers that appear in spring. Needs its head in the sun and its roots in deep, cool, well drained soil. It's compact habit means it can be grown in a container. RHS AGM. Deciduous.

Developed here in New Zealand, its most distinguishable feature are very large (for a Clematis montana) flowers that grow to more than 10 cm in diameter. The flowers are semi-double, soft-pink and arrive in abundance in spring. Looks great against walls, trellis or in a tree.

Clematis Montana. Small, flattish, faintly scented, semi-double, flowers that are pale creamy yellow at the centre of the tepal, shading through pale pink to a deep pink margin. Yellow anthers on white filaments. Deciduous
So named because of the similarity of the flowers to the Pied Piper of Hamelin’s "gypsy coat of red and yellow" in Robert Browning's poem.
