A delicious fruiting shrub that hails from Brazil. That tells you it will like a nice warm sheltered spot in the garden. White flowers in spring followed by sweet and tangy red fruit that ripen from about April. Glossy green foliage. Likes good drainage and protection from harsh frost. Evergreen.

Your Guava will need frost protection when young but will eventually harden to light frosts. The fruit are ready when they are fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch. Do not prune in spring as you will cut off the fruiting flowers that appear on the current seasons branches (wood).

Quince. A most attractive fruiting tree with large pale green fruit. The skin is a soft yellow when ripe. The white flesh is aromatic with a taste that carries a hint of pineapple. Tastes best when cooked or mixed with other fruit. Hardy and tolerant but happiest in the sun. Deciduous.

Quince have a slightly different habit from other orchard trees in that the fruit blossom is borne on the current seasons growth therefore it is best to only lightly prune. Just take out any spindly branches in order to keep the tree open. Suitable for most NZ climates.

Quince. This popular selection is from Turkey and fruits at a young age. Very large, pear shaped, golden yellow aromatic fruits with mild and tender flesh of excellent quality. Harvest March, April may. Moderate sized tree with unusually large leaves. Deciduous.

The fruit keeps very well and can be used for cider, jams and preserves. Who doesn't love Rhubarb? Though the edible stalks of this large perennial are a little tart and acid, cooked up with a little sugar and an apple they are delicious. Great for jams and crumbles. Plant in the sun in well drained soil. Winter dormant in cool areas. Remember - don't eat the leaves.

Rhubarb loves to be fed regularly with compost or any well rotted organic material. The clump will respond well to liquid fertilizer as well. The crowns will get quite large and should be divided every 3 or 4 years.

A vigorous Heritage Rhubarb with healthy, strong upright growth. The stems are broad with quite a bit of green shading on the red stalks. Good flavour and produces well. Plant in humus rich soil that does not completely dry out in summer and feed regularly with organic matter. Perennial.

Wairere Top Tip. Try cooking Rhubarb with 1 sliced apple - it balances out the acid flavour nicely.

Sumptuous large golden fruit that are lovely and sweet (not as tart as the red ones) Small Harvest any time from April to September, dependant on regular picking and when you prune. Prefers well drained, sheltered site in full sun. Semi-evergreen.

Your Tamarillo will appreciate a nice layer of mulch around the drip line - take care not to place against the trunk. Tamarillo's are not particularly long-lived so probably best to replace your tree every 3-4 years.
