Native-Wine Berry-Makomako Serrated green leaves with purple tones to the under-side, clusters of pink flowers in spring which are followed by juicy black berries that birds love. Grows happily in the sun in most soils as long as they are not too dry. Tolerates light frost. Semi-evergreen.

Berries will only occur on the female tree if pollination occurs. The Wine-Berry has separate male and female trees.

It is found only in the north of the North Island, to Kawhia on the west and East Cape on the east. Tarairi likes a good moist, free-draining soil. Although it tolerates shade, its form is fuller if grown in full sun. It will only tolerate a light frost, and is best provided with a wind break when young.

Has a classically pyramidal shape with striking tiers of branches that over time change to form a spreading canopy. Suitable as a speciman tree.
