Species. Beautifully shaped pure white flowers with pronounced golden stamens and a sweet perfume appear amongst the grey-green foliage in early summer. The simple yet exquisite flowers are followed by nice orange hips in the autumn. Tolerant and hardy. From France some time before 1817.

Climber. The flowers of this rose are most unusual and a little hard to describe. Double greyish white blooms tinged with slate lilac and buff with a soft fragrance. Certainly a very pretty and romantic effect when in full bloom. Quite vigorous in habit and combines well with soft pinks. 1955.

Austin Shrub/Climber. Apricot-yellow buds open to a large showly cupped, many petalled rosette. They are a beautiful blend of subtle apricot-pink and soft yellow, giving the overall impression of apricot, with creamy outer petals. Strong, honey, myrrh fragrance. A vigorous climber with mid-green foliage.

The name was inspired by the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd.

China. A perfect little button-hole rose, simply charming. Almost always in flower with small perfect pink blooms that open from long pointed buds. Fragrance is light, sweet and spicy. Etoile de Hollande was first known as a bush rose - this climbing sport from the Netherlands came to the fore in 1931 and is much more vigorous than the bush.
