Outstanding NZ native that forms a handsome spreading tree. Large, glossy, light green dissected foliage. Sprays of rusty red woolly flowers appear in summer followed by scarlet berries with jet black seeds. Will grow in quite exposed conditions but protect from harsh frost. Evergreen.

If you want a well behaved and rewarding evergreen shrub then it would be hard to go past this delightful little Kowhai. Compact and tidy and completely covered in rich yellow bells in late winter that birds love, especially wax eyes. Looks stunning in a container. Easy to grow in sun or part shade.
