Autumn Harvests and Puppies

Hi

OMG The days just absolutely fly past and it doesn't seem that long ago that we were all counting 63 days of pregnancy for Galaxy ( Anthony's Italian Greyhound).   Life hasn't been quite the same for Anthony, starting with a sleepless night the day that they were born. Well!  2am isn't quite the sociable hour on a school night. Now the puppies will all be one week old tomorrow and they are just Oh so cute !!  She is the proudest and most doting of mothers as well. Mind you, I would be too, if I got especially cooked chicken all the time like her.

Three Puppies     Galaxy    whos pretty   Feeding time

It seems that there is always fruit to harvest and its Feijoa time right at the moment and they will be still going in another couple of weeks.  But they not the only fruits to be ripening at the moment as I grabbed my first Persimmon of the season off the tree as I walked  past it the other day. Now persimmons are pretty stunning in the garden and they look gorgeous full of those bright orange fruits. If we get a cool snap those leaves will go dark red and then drop leaving the tree naked and full of fruit which looks awesome.  It would seem that oranges and yellows are the colours of autumn /winter as I see the first of the mandarins ripening.  Usually its Satsuma or one of its many varieties that are the first to colour and be ready

Feijoa stuff

Feijoas are native to south Brazil and northern Argentina and for those budding botanists out there belong to the family Myrtaceae .  Feijoas were named by a German Botanist after a Portuguese Botanist called João da Silva Feijó   born in Brazil. Some Feijoa cultivars are self fertile but most aren't so you are best to plant a couple of plants that are different varieties. Now Feijoas must be  one of the easiest plants to crop as they don't get anything wrong with them. Well  as far as I know anyways. The plants themselves are tough and hardy coping with hot sunny positions and even wind. They can make for great hedges and I even had a lady in the other day that told me that she had espaliered her Feijoa along a fenceline which I think would look pretty cool A good concept as feijoas fruit on the outside of the plant on new wood so pruning after fruit will create flowering and fruiting wood for the following season.  This will also keep the plant to a reasonable size.

Feijoa Chutney      Feijoas      Feijoas

Thank you to all those that sent in recipes for Feijoas. I have to say that Feijoa and coconut cake is devine and probably one of my favourite cakes, I want to say a special thanks to Caroline who wrote and shared...

Hi Lloyd and Harry and Harry's dad,

If you google Peter Gordon's Roast Feijoa and Manuka Chutney recipe you will find something divine.  I made it when I had a glut of feijoas in our previous garden.  Sadly I am still waiting for the one year old trees to come into fruit in this garden.  This is one of the most amazing flavours you will ever eat!!!! Great with everything from meat to cheese.

Envy the glut. Kind regards, Caroline

Well I did the appropriate "google"  printed off the recipe sheet and handed it over to dad, Well just as Caroline says its divine

Now Dad made a half measure of this recipe and ended up with 5 jars of chutney, he used capsicums instead of the green chillies and used 6 cardamon pods instead of any black cardamon otherwise he followed it all as written.
