24 Days to Xmas...... LOL

Hi

Bee Food, something a little different !
It was a gorgeous spring day and the skies were cloudless and the temperature was just stunningly warm. You've got the picture in your head. Well I was wandering down the side gate through into our garden and there was this really loud humming noise above. I looked up into the tree that it was coming from and there were masses of bees obviously collecting pollen from our large Nyssa sylvatica tree (Tulepo)  The interesting thing about this is it's the last tree that I would of thought to plant  for bees and even though it's in full bloom  you really have to look hard to even seen the flowers.  Now what's a Tulepo trees, well its claim to fame is its ability to live in quite wet feet and has the most amazing autumn colours, even here in the Waikato,  We don't have any just at the moment but will have again in the winter when all the new seasons trees will be in again. Ours has done equally as well in quite a dry spot but I have planted quite a few more in a very wet spot to dry it out.
Actually not all of the above is true, Harry had to drag me to the tree and tell me to listen,  and then even to look upwards, where he had to point out the bees LOL.  I was just making it sound good !!!
Cornus National     Cornus National
Now whilst on the subject of trees, if you are driving past the nursery look out for the dogwoods that are in full bloom at the moment. They are spectacular with their white flowers which are just starting to age to pinkish tones. This Cornus belongs to the species kousa and is the variety National and it has quite a spreading form that would make for a great shade tree especially if limbed up. Now after the flowers they tend to have attractive red strawberry like fruits, which I m sure that if you are into feeding the birds make for a great feast.  Autumn colours are another excellent bonus for this family of trees.
Flower pot Christmas cakes.
It's the last day of the month today and so we are really on that count down for Christmas. Now I suddenly remembered a couple of years ago that Harry and I made these individual Christmas cakes in small Itallian terra cotta pots and I suggested that we make them again this year  We used approx 10cm Italian T/c pots in classic flower pot shape and cut baking paper to fit the bottom of the pot. Give the inside of the pots a spray with  cooking oil and pop down the baking paper circle and spray that as well. Fill with your favourite fruit or Christmas cake recipe and decorate the top with glace cherries and blanched almonds and bake as normal.  Time may be shorter due to the container size. If I remember rightly we wrapped and ribboned ours with cellophane and Voila a cool little gift that you have made yourself. Just too easy.  While on a handy hint roll you can get large Italian Terracotta saucers that make for great dishes for cooking frittatas in. I use them for fritattas that we make for our Christmas Champagne breakfast.
What to give for Prezzies other than Christmas cake in a flower pot?
Vouchers
Long Tom pots are a really cool taller flower pot style. Available as two sizes or get them as the set Set price is normally $34.99 these two pots for just $18.00. Pot them up with a ground cover and push a tall candle in for a great table top feature.
Antiqued pots in wire baskets are a winner and there is time to pot them up for xmas, 3 piece wire basket $44.99 now just $22.99, also available as two pots and singles in baskets.
Secateurs and shears, great quality and long lasting for gardening family or friend. We have been using the shears and the secateurs in the nursery and they have been just excellent. The shears are nice and light and very sharp and just wonderful for hedges and topiary.
Table top wax candles for outdoor entertaining 34.99 now just $10.00 while stocks last
When in  doubt Vouchers are a really good option and you can get them in whatever amounts you want. We can even post them out for you.

Wax candles     Secateurs    Pot Long toms  Ties    Herbs in basket
Grow your own
Raspberries There is a stash of these and some are even going to have berries on them so if you are a hankering to grow you own raspberries then we have  heaps of good plants $12.99 just 6.99. Now raspberries are really easy to grow, Check out for the technical stuff under How to on the web.
Grapes from $9.99. so easy to grow  and just yum to pick, While on grapes remember that you let each runner have two sets of grapes and then keep the runner pinched so that all the goodness goes into growing grapes and not the vine
Spuds, What we have left is all half price, if you want them couriered the $5.00 wil get them to your door
Egg plants, Capscicums and a few Chillis are fresh up on the tables as are the first of the basils in the Herb range. These vege that are ready now are the ones that love the heat and its been pretty warm here lately. I think that egg plants with their purple globe fruit look really attractive in the garden.
Cape Gooseberries, now they are a blast from the past, delicious to eat from their paper hats or if you collect enough of them turn them into jam or salsa. Just $3.99 a plant.
Mail Order House Keeping
Because its that time of year, our last date for mail order and courier dispatch will be Wed 19th of December. Our first dispatch for the New year will be Tuesday the 15th of January
Now I don't know what you will be doing this weekend but I know that we will be making Christmas cake mix and baking them in little terra cotta pots. I tell you its a winner and a great prezzie for a surpise visitor or someone that youve forgotten to get something for. Its its not baking, gardening or visiting the nursery, have a great weekend.
Cheers, Lloyd and Harry and the team
