Where do the weeks go!

Hi

What happened to last week......
My oh  My It feels like last week was just yesterday that so much happens in such a short space of time. I missed my weekly email and here we are at the next one which I had planned for Wed and its now Friday.   You never know what's going to happen in a day though and yesterday morn was taken up assessing damage  and fixing and replacing things after someone broke into the shop. More of a nuisance and once the local police had visited, its on with the day as usual.
Typical of us we have a new project on the go and thats to make the car park space bigger and to open up the north end. I have to say its looking pretty good and its always time for a change.  The other project that is in mind is not so visible but its making our mail order dispatch area bigger and more efficient.
Growing Spectrum celebrate 40 Years
Now last week,  Growing spectrum had a big do on celebrating forty years of business.  No mean feat I say and not only that,  in my book they are one of the best wholesale nurseries around. They would have to be a model for our industry with their slick operation and an inspiration to all of us in the plant trade. I will even fess up and say that there are not many nurseries that I would buy product sight unseen and GS is one of them.
Harry and Angela attended their open day and luncheon and came back with glowing reports and excitement about the future.  New plants that are planned for the future still in quarantine or in tissue culture. Gotta mention here too, its a different  way of doing business from when I started out.  Lol, Gone are the days when you drove around with a batch of plants that were ready for sale, now you have to order in advance to make sure you get them. What sets GS apart is their attention to detail and the quality of product. Great quality plants are well trimmed in the production stages so that they are all set to go.
Apples
What to do with a new seasons Fruit Trees.
Now last week I touched on fruit trees  and  how you have to remove the growing tips or approx one third of those long stems to encourage all the side branches to grow in coming season. Its from this new growth that you will start to sort the framework of your new fruit tree. Now most new seasons trees will need some help along the way  over the initial three to four years as well. Weeping Crabapple and Prunus may need to have the weeping growth tipped to encourage  other growth to make the cool dome shape that they should end up with.  Nearly all trees that have been grafted low will need the lower branches removed to get the trunk to the right height. The secret with training all these plants is to keep it all relative and to remove the right amount in each season.
Blushing pink Iceberg and Palmers Gold Standards
Palmers Gold
One of our suppliers put out a bit of a deal this week on some surplus standards. These are good quality plants which normally are $44.99 but can do them for only $29.99. First in first served. Blushing pink is really pretty and has all the classic attributes of the white Iceburgs. The Palmers Gold is a new rose to me but looks just gorgeous with its golden yellow blooms and typical floribunda style.
Raspberries Its always the way in  garden in that you always have to think six months ahead.... at least  and getting your Raspberries in is no different. These are here now and need to be planted. They are pretty easy chappies to grow and I suggest either along a piece of fence or let them create a bushy area. Chris who helps me with the plant tech stuff is writing some tips on Raspberries and it can be found under HOW TO. Raspberry plants are $6.99 each or two or more for $5.00 each. Now if there is any one who want a bundle of 10 or 25  bareroot then perhaps send me an email to lloyd@wairere.co.nz
Lily of valley the real mcoy. over the past couple of years  this delightful perennial has been asked for more and more. We have plent in at the moment of the tradional white form and the lesser known pink one. Great for a dappled light area and fragrance to die for!
Griselinia Alpine. we have plenty of these excellent plants and just awesome for a quick hedge. normally $14.99 now just $10.99, these plants are  90cm high and all set to go in. Plant at 70 to 100cm spacing for a hedge.
Sprayers These are small hand pump  ones and ideal for those with only  a few plants but want to get that copper onto their rose
Hedges
If you are gardening in the weekend, get pruning from now on and remember that it must be done prior to spring leaf burst. Its also important not to prune if its wet. If your new roses are in leaf then its too late for harsh sprays like lime sulphur and copper. If you see any leaf drop from your new roses then its important to spray with shield  or spring sprays.
Hope that everyone is having an enjoyable school holidays. Take care
Cheers
