There are so many good reasons to plant a New Zealand native as gardeners all over the world have discovered. During a recent trip to Europe I swear I saw a Cabbage Tree (Corydline) in every back yard I peeked into! Here at home, planting a NZ Native is really an act of conservation as it ensures the continuation of native plant species. Along with that there is the added bonus of attracting native birds to your garden and beneficial native insects. However before we get too "Green" and serious lets just apreciate the wonderful layers of colour, texture and distinctive form that NZ Natives offer the gardener.

Lovely native perennial that has green sword like foliage that forms a clump. In summer dainty stems of pale blue flowers appear, these are followed by the main act which is the display of blue berries. Happiest in dappled light but will tolerate some sun. Evergreen.

Native. This is the most common tree fern found in forests throughout New Zealand. It is a medium sized tree fern., fastest growing and tolerates a wide range of conditions. The fronds are harsh to touch and are dark green above and paler on the underside. Water well. Evergreen.

Native. This shade loving herbaceous ground cover also loves the damp. Found at the base of waterfalls and along streams and gullies so plant where consistent moisture is available. Our only Native Euphorbia, found mainly in coastal areas of New Zealand. Red stems and blue grey foliage topped off with grey terminal flower heads with maroon bracts. Flowers from spring through to summer. Prefers a sunny spot, tolerant of coastal conditions. Perennial.

The Maori name for this plant is Wainatua which means 'milk of the demons' referring to the milky sap of the stems. It is best to take care that this sap does not make contact with your skin - if it does wash off ASAP.
