Always a project on the go!!

Hi

Nursery Improvement Project

There is always a project, or should I say projects, and this weeks was to clear all the plants from down the hill in the sales area so that we could improve the drainage. Apparently we sit on the edge of one of the old courses of the Waikato River and there are some seepage points where the water comes out from the sand banks and over the years we have just channelled the seepage areas out to the local drainage board drain. In the winter time this particular area gets really wet underfoot so while it's nice and dry and not so much stock there, we cleared it all, fixed the drains, built the area up higher and will redo the layout and design and off course fill it back up with some great buys to tempt you lol.  There are more outside projects planned over the next couple of weeks like tarting up the area that we keep for our standard roses.

Roses

New Rose Releases

These are not the only projects on the go as Teresa has been making sure that come June we will have the best range of roses, fruit trees and stock available. I tell you it's some task as we have to go through the year's sales and see what has sold and what hasn't. No mean feat when there are over 600 rose items alone. Now while on the subject of the roses there apparently has been a review of the David Austin roses in New Zealand and some of our old favs are going to be phased out over the next couple years. So if there is a particular one that you are after, then now's the time to order or get them in or at  the latest order for June 2013. Click here to view and order these roses now.

Of course there will be a whole range of new Austin's being released over the next few years to take their place and some of them are pretty dam cool. One that springs to mind that was released to us last year is Summer Song which was the most amazing colour of orange and there were a few others that looked pretty good as well . Now that  brings a point that if there is a particular rose or any tree, fruit or otherwise, that you are after and it is not on our site then send Teresa an email. She will check its availability or if you just want to be notified when a particular rose or plant is in then email us on sales@wairere.co.nz . Click here for new roses to us for 2012.

Fruit

Rose Stuff

Make sure that you are giving your roses plenty of water as its suddenly got dry and warm again. If you have any black spot, then do a couple of close sprays with shield and definately one if we get showers forecast. If it stays dry then mites may make a meal out out of your rose leaves, cattle drench at 1 ml per litre is good, otherwise use a miticide as shield won't deal to mites. Wetting the underside of your roses leaves when watering will help deter mites.  Don't forget  that we still have 25 % off all our current rose stock in store and there are plenty of good quality plants.

Pesto Feed back and Update

We make loads of pesto every year ourselves but use 3 cups basil and  1 cup parsley in our mix. Substitute walnuts for pine nuts to save pennies (no difference in taste outcome) half cup nuts and half cup parmesan is fine. Basil and Parsley loosely packed however. Add a touch of salt and four clove garlic, whizz it all up with a cup of olive oil and then freeze in ice cube trays. Haven't tried the caper idea, sounds interesting. We turn the cubes out into freezer bags and defrost as required. Currently have 16 large bags in the freezer, some from last summer and still tastes perefct when heated in a saucepan and put in jars to restock the fridge. Great with fresh pasta and anything else that you can imagine, will try the capers in my next sortie.
