Well we can't award this winter flowering shrub the top prize for beauty but we can give it 10 out of 10 for perfume. From mid winter the bare branches are covered in soft yellow flowers with the most delicious fragrance. Picks well so put some in a vase for instant aromatherapy. Deciduous.

Mexican Orange Blossom. This elegant shrub has fine narrow dark green aromatic foliage. In summer pink buds open out to a mass of white starry flowers. Very pretty as a back-ground shrub in the border. Will grow in sun or part shade and is quite undemanding and hardy. Evergreen.

A useful evergreen shrub to brighten up dull and shady corners of the garden as the new foliage is a golden yellow maturing to yellow-green. Little white flowers appear in spring. Happy in average conditions with protection from the afternoon sun.

Commonly known as Mexican Orange Blossom which refers to the look of the flower rather than the fragrance. Both the leaves and flowers of Choisya have an aromatic fragrance rather than a sweet perfume.

Rock Rose. A lovely little shrub for a sunny border or bank. The grey-green foliage is aromatic and has open faced blooms of pure white, with a crimson blotch and yellow centre making a very showy display in late spring. Prefers well drained soil, can tolerate drought once established. Evergreen.

Cistus should be trimmed lightly after flowering. They prefer a light soil and don't need a lot of feeding.

Rock Rose. A spreading evergreen shrub with aromatic grey-green felted foliage and masses of crisp white flowers with yellow centres that appear in spring. Selected as something special at the Botanical Gardens in Auckland. Loves the sun and good drainage and tolerates light frost.
